Network Management Overview
CITA 440 Week 2 Network Management Overview
2
Network Management OAMP (Traditionally OAM&P)
Operations: Daily operations in providing network services. Administration: Establishing and administering the overall goals, policies, and procedures of network management. Maintenance: Including both installation and repairs of facilities and equipment Provisioning: Network planning and circuit provisioning
3
Management Agents Managed network devices which have a management process running in them. Can be hosts, hubs, bridges, routers, printers, or any other devices capable of communicating status information to the outside world. For example, to be managed directly by SNMP, an agent must be capable of running SNMP management process, called SNMP agent (process).
4
Management Stations Managing network devices running special management software called the Network Management Systems (NMS) which contain processes that communicate with the managed agents over networks, issuing commands and getting responses. Many management stations have a graphical user interface to inspect the status of networks and take action when required. The process running on the SNMP management station is called SNMP manager.

Management Agent/Station OSI Stacks
7
Network Management Technology Example: CMIP (OSI)
Common Management Information Protocol International standard (ISO/IEC, ITU-T) Management of data communications networks - LAN and WAN Deals with all seven layers Most complete and most complex Object oriented Well structured and layered Consumes large resource in implementation
8
Network Management Technology Example: SNMP (Internet)
Simple Network Management Protocol Industry standard (IETF) Originally intended for management of Internet components, currently also adopted for WAN and telecommunication systems Easy to implement Most widely implemented
9
Network Management Technology Example: TMN
International standard (ITU-T) Management of telecommunications network Based on OSI network management framework Addresses both network and administrative aspects of management
10
Network Management Technology Example: IEEE
IEEE standards adopted internationally Addresses management of LANs and MANs Adopts OSI standards significantly Deals with the first (bottom) two layers of the OSI Reference Model
11
Network Management Technology Example: Web-Based Management
Currently no specific standards Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) – specifications being developed by desktop management task force Java Management Extensions (JMX) – developed on special subset of java applets by Sun Microsystems
