James was born in Dunedin to Archibald Baxter (his father) and Millicent Brown (His mother). His name sake is James Keir Hardie. His father had been a CO during the first world war. His mother studied at the presbyterian girl college. The university ebb in Australia, they have claimed to that he had begun to write poetry at the age of seven. He continued to write throughout his lifetime. James typically wrote short lyrical poems rather than longer poems. In 1944 when james was seventeen he joined the University of Otago and that year he published his first collection of poetry, Beyond the Palisades, to much critical acclaim.

Baxter was increasingly devoted to an private kind of community work, often around the young Maori people, from 1970 he finished a commune for ‘hippy drop-outs’ alongside the Maori Catholic community on the Whanganui River; Jerusalem Sonnets (1970) and Jerusalem Daybook (1971) reflect this period. James K. Baxter as Critic (1978), edited by Frank McKay, revealed influences as diverse as Hardy, Yeats, MacNeice, Durrell, and Lowell. collected Poems (1980; corrected 1981) was edited by J. E. Weir, and Collected Plays (1982) was edited by Howard McNaughton. Studies are James K. Baxter by Mike Doyle (1976) and The Life of James K. Baxter by Frank McKay (1990).Read more: James K. 6 James died in Auckland in the year 1972, when he died he was at the age 46.
His body was escorted by his family back to Jerusalem. Hundreds of mourners attended a full Maori tangihanga. He was buried on tribal land. One year later a boulder was made for his head stone. James was born on the 6th of the 29 in the year 1926.
