MLHS ATHLETICS MEET THE COACHES NIGHT
3
MLHS ATHLETICS THE HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS EXPERIENCE the most meaningful and the most influential athletic experience in one’s life
5
“There are little eyes upon you
And they watch you day and night...”
6
VALUE OF HS SPORTS The Value of HS Sports is being muted by travel, club and elite teams. The school and community experience is being overshadowed. Here in ML we know their value and seek to promote it. The cooperation between parents and teams makes this special. It is about the Experience
7
The Multi-Sport Athlete
MLHS Athletics prides itself on our participation numbers 73%, 45% Research has shown that the multi-sport athlete is a more valued recruit to college coaches Conversely, the single sport athlete is more prone to injury and to burn out. High School is the time for kids to play more than one sport, even if they intend to play at the collegiate level. For all of the reasons outlined above – the experience can be invaluable.

12
COACHES -EDUCATORS FIRST -VALUE BOTH WINNING AND THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE -THEY CARE ABOUT YOUR KIDS -THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS -THEY TAKE PRIDE IN BEING AT MLHS BECAUSE OF YOUR KIDS + BECAUSE OF THIS COMMUNITY
13
PARENTS WHAT CAN YOU DO? -LET YOUR CHILD OWN THE EXPERIENCE Let them work through issues -BE POSITIVE AND SUPPORTIVE -TALK ABOUT RELEVANT TOPICS: SOCIAL MEDIA PITFALLS TRAINING RULES DIET and SLEEP WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TEAMMATE PLAYING TIME -SET A GOOD EXAMPLE - GET INVOLVED – HELP OUT.
14
HOW TO HANDLE ISSUES IF THERE IS AN ISSUE – YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO COME TALK ABOUT IT. WHO,HOW, AND WHEN ARE VERY IMPORTANT RESPECT THE COACH’S “RULES” USE THE “CHAIN OF COMMAND” 1. ATHLETE TO COACH 2. PARENT AND ATHLETE TO COACH 3. PARENT/ PLAYER TO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 4. PARENT TO PRINCIPAL/ AD
15
SPORTSMANSHIP- make it a priority
- NJAC CONFERENCE IS MAKING THIS TOPIC A POINT OF EMPHASIS – GOAL IS TO HAVE ML BE A LEADER IN THIS AREA. SET A POSITIVE EXAMPLE + KNOW YOUR ROLE - NO ALCOHOL BEFORE OR DURING GAMES - AVOID COMMENTS TO / CONFRONTATIONS WITH OPPOSING FANS - NEVER SPEAK TO AN OPPOSING PLAYER OR COACH - LET THE OFFICIALS DO THEIR JOB** - REPRESENT MLHS and OUR COMMUNITIES WELL - REMEMBER WHERE THE FOCUS SHOULD BE + KEEP IT THERE - THESE ARE OUR KIDS – NOT PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES – WE VALUE THE EDUCATIONAL ASPECT HIGHLY. - THEIR EXPERIENCE IS WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT.

From Steve Timko -President NJSIAA
“Frankly, given the fan culture at the professional and even the college level, it’s a constant battle to reinforce that high school athletics, while entertaining, are not entertainment. Rather they are an extension of the classroom. Adults – administrators, coaches, officials, teachers, parents, and journalists – need to be mindful of the distinctions between the different levels of sport.”
