2 Objectives After learning the lesson, students can be able to:
(1) know the importance of religions. (2) understand different perspectives about religions. (3) respect different people’s beliefs.

3 Warm-up 1. Talk about religious observances and associated faiths through the textbook.

4 Warm-up 2. Find more information on the religion and the corresponding holiday that fall within a particular month.

5 Warm-up 3. Introductory Information for Students:
What is a religion? 3-2 Have students define the term “religion.” 3-3 Have them share their ideas verbally with the class.

6 Warm-up ***The sociologist Emil Durkheim’s classical definition: “[Religion is] a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things that is to say, things set apart and forbidden—beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community.”***

7 The teaching procedure
1. Write down the question “What do we know about world religions?” on the board. 2. Have students offer their answers.

3. Introduce the names of world religions we know in Taiwan: Christinaity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Taoism etc.

4. Show students the faiths in order of the number of adherents worldwide with the chart below.

5. Class discussion: after looking the chart above, ask students:

5-1. Does the pie chart show what you would have predicted? 5-2. What was surprising?

5-3. What was something new that your learned? 5-4. How does Taiwan differ from the rest of the world? 5-5. How is it similar?

13 Group discussion 1. Divide the whole class into 5 groups, at a group of 8 people or so. (According to the total number of a class, there will be different members at a group).

14 Group discussion 2. Ask each group to pick up one religion to do the oral presentation. 3. At the third and fourth periods, each group will take turns to do a 15-minute oral presentation about different religious topics.

15 Group discussion 4. For each religion, cover the following:
When was it founded? Was there an identifiable founder? Whether it is monotheistic, polytheistic or nontheistic.

16 Group discussion Where in the world most of the faith’s adherents are located. Major beliefs or emphases Scriptures or holy texts/books

17 Group discussion Key figures or individuals
Major values or rules for human behavior Key holidays/holy days/religious observances

18 Group discussion What is unique about the religion
What is similar about the religion

19 Group Presentation Each group takes turns to report the religious information that they found related to the topic that they picked up. Show it by PowerPoint. Hand in a hard copy after the oral presentation.

24 Some Taboos in Taiwan Taiwanese act carefully with religious beliefs and never want to offend any God, for instance: Don’t stab your rice with your chopsticks. Don’t select number 4. Don't hang your clothes outside at night. Don't swim during the Ghost Month. When you enter your hotel room, knock first to let the ghosts know you're coming in.
