Types of Water Pollution:
There are many different kinds of water pollution, each with its own sources and effects.
Point-source pollution comes from a specific location (factory or sewage pipe)
Nonpoint-source pollution come from spread out sources (runoff)
Five categories of water pollution include: Nutrient, Toxic-chemical, sediment, thermal and biological pollution.

Groundwater Pollution:
Groundwater pollution takes decades to clean up, focus now is on prevention.
Groundwater pollution is difficult to prevent because it can occur from any surface area.
Pollution may be caused by pesticides, fertilizers, leaky storage tanks, sewage lines, gasoline, etc.

Ocean Water Pollution:
Ocean are polluted with oil, toxic chemicals and nutrients that runoff from the land.
Oil pollution comes from boats, runoff and even naturally occurring oil seepage causing marine life being smothered and poisoned.
Heavy metals, such as mercury, can build up in the food chain and cause harm to those who consume aquatic animals.
High nitrogen levels can cause red tide disrupting the food chain.

Controlling Water Pollution:
Government regulation and water treatment are two means to decrease water pollution.
Clean Water Act of 1977 – banned point-source without a permit, set water pollution standards, funded sewage treatment plants.
Water treatment is utilized to improve water quality, make it safe for use, and remove toxic substances.
