2 How to evaluate vocabulary mastery?
● Limited response ● Multiple-choice completion ● Multiple-choice paraphrase ● Simple completion (words)

3 How to test vocabulary is related to how we teach it?
ESL teachers (X) Don’t recommend having students simply memorize lists of words (O) Teach students to find the meaning of words through the context of the sentence.

4 Affixes ● happy →unhappy ● beauty→beautiful ● care →careless
Stress reading: He bought a cake at the _______. (A) bank (B) bakery (C) hardware store (D) bookstore

5 Individual Testing →Physical responses can easily be used when you test one student. ●Please go to the window. ●Please hand me the chalk. Group testing →Nonverbal physical responses as well to test the whole class. ● To draw or duplicate a sketch.

6 Advantages of Limited Response 1
Advantages of Limited Response 1. It causes less stress or nervousness than other types of tests It avoids skills such as reading and writing that have not yet been developed It can be scored easily and objectively.

7 Limitations of Limited Response 1
Limitations of Limited Response 1. It requires individual testing, which takes longer than group testing. 2. It is usually difficult to test abstract words with this technique. 3. Sketches are sometimes ambiguous.

8 Multiple-Choice Completion It makes the student depend on context clues and sentence meaning. (2.1) She quickly _____ her lunch. A. drank B. ate C. drove D. slept The answer is (B)

9 Vocabulary Choice Good way to test more difficult vocabulary items.
Specialized words like debit, account, balance, margin… Western ways and expressions like laundromat, sunny side up, three credit hours Sex bias like recipe, carburetor, hosiery, screwdriver.

10 Context Preparation Sometimes-especially for beginning students-more than one sentence is needed to help clarify meaning. Ex. “I want to paint, too.” “All right. Use that _____ over there.” (A) brush (B) pencil (C) broom (D) spoon

11 “ Human beings communicate in many ways?”
“Some people communicate disapproval by holding their nose between their thumb and forefinger.”

12 Distractor Preparation
1. Make sure the distractors are the same form of word as the correct answer. Ex. She has to help the ___ old man up the stairs. (A) weak (B) slowly (C) try (D) wisdom

13 2. Also be sure you don’t give away the right answer through grammatical cues.
Ex. She needs to get up earlier so she’s buying an ___ clock. (A) time (B) alarm (C) watch (D) bell

14 3. Multiple-choice items for any one question should be about the same level of difficulty.
Ex. They needed lots of training to operate such ___ equipment. (A) easy (B) sophisticated (C) blue (D) wise

15 4. Also be sure not to include more than one correct answer.
Ex. She sent the ___ yesterday (A) letter (B) gift (C) food (D) books

16 Instruction Preparation
The instructions for your test should be brief and clear. Instructions can really become a kind of “test” oral instructions can amount to an unintended “listening test.”

17 Alternate Forms of Multiple-Choice Completion
Definition Phrase completion Phrasal context (a) Idioms (b) Appropriateness to context Multiple-choice cloze

18 Vocabulary Choice and Context Preparation
Select the words to be tested Prepare a sentence context Choose distractors Write instructions

21 To paraphrase questions
Both use a key word in a sentence 1.To find the best synonym or related word 2.To choose the best definition or paraphrase key word Page.26.27

22 Advantages: 1.Context preparation is rather easy 2.Scoring is easy and consistent 3.It is a sensitive measure of achievement Limitations: 1.It is difficult to find good synonyms 2.It is easy for students to cheat

23 Simple completion (words)
Prefixes and suffixes are usually needed in- un- -ful -able No distractors are needed 1.List prefixes and suffixes they’ve learned 2.Prepare sent. that clarify the meaning of words 3.Write instructions and examples

24 Vocb. Choice *Quick -ly *Cooperative -un *Teach -er *Care -less

25 Instruction Preparation
It would be helpful to put examples for Ss Alternate forms of simple-completion items 1.Stem-first procedure 2.Phrasal context 3.Compounds 4.Inflectional cloze

26 Advantage 1.It reflects teaching approaches 2.It is generally faster and easier to construct than are items w/ distractors Limitations 1.Fewer words can be tested 2.Some difficulty in avoiding ambiguous contexts
