Maths- Written Calculations Questions

Routines- Homework Spellings- age appropriate and differentiated taken from the National Curriculum. Regular practice is essential. Mental Maths- quick fire at least once a day at home (ten minutes is enough). It is essential that all children know their times tables by Christmas. Rapid recall of known facts is essential in every day life and to solve other more complex written calculations and real life problems. USING AND APPLYING (4 operations) IS A KEY AREA OF THE MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM. Reading- Encourage your child to read every night and listen to them read or share a book on a regular basis, to check their understanding. Homework – This will be given out on a Friday and returned the following Wednesday, this will change towards SATS. Please check the homework diary daily- sign to acknowledge that you have seen and checked written homework-STANDARDS!!

Routines- independence
Homework diaries, reading books, reading diaries and PE kit should be in school every day. Homework- It is the children’s responsibility to copy down the activities accurately and ensure that homework is handed in on time. Please support them!

Recall of methods. New test See handout for the expectations at the end of Year 6.

Literacy writing having a grammar focus Children to understand the correct terminology New test

SPAG Sessions Terminology such as
Subordinating and Coordinating conjunctions. Subordinate clauses. Antonym and Synonym. Present perfect, past perfect etc Relative clauses Prepositions

Spellings From the new National Curriculum.
Differentiation as and when appropriate. Four spelling sessions a week. Spelling tests each Friday morning.

Written Calculations Good mental maths knowledge is essential.
The children will always be given time to learn, consolidate and use these methods. They will always be expected to use and apply these methods when solving real life problems.

Maths- Written Calculations Addition
Mainly using the compact method (with carrying) Th, H, T, U + Th H T U = Numbers with any amount of digits Addition of two or more decimals of up to four digits with up to two decimal places.

Maths- Written Calculations Subtraction
TH, H, T, U – Th, H, T, U Then with any number of digits. Subtract two or more decimals of up to three digits with either one or two decimal places. Decomposition with borrowing.

Bus stop method Whole numbers dealing with remainders. See handout for examples.
