10. The Southern Colonies: Who?
Catholics, Protestants, English landowners, and skilled laborers settled in the Southern colonies of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia

11. The Southern Colonies: Why?
The colonists were seeking religious freedom, political freedom, and profit.

12. The Southern Colonies: Climate
The winters in the Southern colonies were cold and rainy, while the summers were hot and humid.

13. Southern Colonies: Geography
There were low and fertile wetlands, wooded mountains, and red clay plains in the Southern colonies.

14. Southern Colonies: Economy
The economy in the Southern colonies was based on cash crops.
Some common occupations were farming, ranching, lumbering, shipping, fishing, trading, and iron mining.

15. Southern Colonies: Government
The Southern colonies were self governing.
Virginia had an elected assembly called the House of Burgesses

16. Southern Colonies: Slavery
The colonists in the Southern colonies owned slaves and indentured servants.
The climate was perfect for growing cash crops, therefore, many people owned large tobacco plantations.
The farmers needed help caring for the crops and bought slaves to work in the fields.

Imagine that you are a poor farmer living in England during the 1600s.
You are a good farmer but you need more land in order to be more profitable.
Furthermore, you live in an area where people have been arguing and fighting with one another over religion.
Turn to your shoulder partner and explain why you would go to America. Also explain how you would pay for your trip. Look to your notes for clues as to why you would go and how you would pay for it.

19. The Middle Colonies: Who?
The Four Middle Colonies were New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. English Quakers originally settled in the Middle Colonies.
People from France, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Scotland, and Ireland soon joined the Quakers.

20. The Middle Colonies: Why?
Like Colonists in New England, the settlers in the Middle Colonies were seeking religious freedom and new lives.
They also wanted to start a settlement where everyone would be treated equally.

21. Middle Colonies: Climate
In the Middle Colonies, winters were cold and snowy while summers were hot and humid.

22. Middle Colonies: Geography
The four Middle Colonies had rich soil that was great for farming.
New York and Pennsylvania had valleys and wooded mountains.

23. Middle Colonies: Economy
There were many different occupations available to the settlers in the Middle Colonies.
Some of these were fur trapping, lumbering, shipping, slave trading, farming, and iron mining.
The economy was mostly based on farming, since the soil was fertile in this region.
The Middle Colonies were nick-named “The Bread Basket,” because of the amount of grains and different foods grown there.

24. Middle Colonies: Government
The Middle Colonies were self-governed.
New York had a British appointed governor and council that alternated with an assembly by the citizens.

25. Middle Colonies Slavery
Slavery was not very common in the Middle Colonies.
Colonists in the Middle Colonies believed that everyone should be treated the same way and pressured other colonists not to own slaves.
