Early Life
Harriet was born into slavery in 1819 or 1820 in Dorcester County, Maryland.
Both of Harriet’s parents were slaves.
At age 25, Harriet married John Tubman, a free African American.

After her marriage, Harriet began to fear that she would be sold South.
She was aided in her escape by an existing Underground Railroad.
Put in a wagon and covered with a sack, Harriet was smuggled to Philadelphia, PA.

4. The Underground Railroad
Harriet began her work in the Underground Railroad because she wanted to save members of her own family.
