Early Life Harriet was born into slavery in 1819 or 1820 in Dorcester County, Maryland. Both of Harriet’s parents were slaves. At age 25, Harriet married John Tubman, a free African American. cgi-bin/id/A html

Harriet began her work in the Underground Railroad because she wanted to save members of her own family. Harriet is believed to have helped over 300 people to freedom.
