4 If at First you don’t Secede…
Fearing the split of the nation Henry Clay passes the Compromise of 1850 which stated: California would be a FREE state The rest of Mexican Gained land would vote for Free/Slave Status Texas would give up land and The federal government would pay off Mexican debt Slave Trade would end in Washington DC Strict Fugitive Slave Laws would be passed Both Pro and Anti Slavery States would be upset with the Compromise and the South began to talk of Succession If at First you don’t Secede…

5 The Fugitive Slave Act makes it easier to recapture escaped slaves from the south
Anyone who helped a slave escape could be sent to jail for 6 months or be fined dollars Judges who decided a slaves status made FIVE dollars if a slave was determined to be free and TEN dollars if they were returned to slavery The North Began to oppose The Fugitive Slave Act Because they disliked having to help, the judges pay rate, and the free Africans who were sent into slavery The Arrest of Fugitive Slave Anthony Burns led to Violence in Boston killing a Deputy, Causing many more to Join the Abolition Movement in Massachusetts As the Resistance to Slavery Grew Harriet Beecher Stowe writes Uncle Tom’s Cabin to help show the Injustice of Slavery I Did NOT Kill My Wife…

6 The Democrats Nominated Franklin Pierce as president because he promised to honor the Compromise of 1850 and The Fugitive Slave Act which would gain southern votes The Whigs Passed on Current President Millard Fillmore and Nominated Winfield Scott, a war hero, Who was not trusted by the South Franklin Pierce won the election of 1852 in a Landslide, putting the Whig Party into danger of Disbanding The Election of 1852

7 Workin’ on that railroad
Stephen Douglas Proposed a Railroad System that Stretched from Chicago to California which would run through Missouri In Order to Build the Railroad, the south demanded that land west of Missouri be opened up for slavery Douglas Proposed, in the Kansas-Nebraska Act, that the Louisiana Territory be split up into slave territory(Kansas) and free territory(Nebraska) eliminating the Missouri Compromise Congress would approve the Kansas-Nebraska Act with opposition from the north, and the Railroad that was proposed would not be part of the Bill Workin’ on that railroad

8 Pro and Anti Slavery groups rushed to Kansas in order to vote for the state’s slave status
More than 5000 Pro Slavery Advocates Voted in Kansas and then returned home which created a pro slavery legislature New Laws made it illegal to question slaveholders rights and approved the death penalty for helping a slave escape The Anti-Slavery People in Kansas would form their own legislature but be largely ignored, including by the president Trouble Brewing

9 As TWO governments opposed each other in Kansas the Federal Government only Recognized the Pro Slavery Government The Pro-Slavery leaders charged the Anti-Slavery Leaders with Treason and moved to Arrest them, but since they had fled the Pro-Slavery leaders destroyed Lawrence Kansas, where they had settled In Response john Brown led Anti Slavery Leaders to Pottawatomie Creek and killed FIVE Pro-Slavery Men, known as the Pottawatomie Massacre, which threw Kansas into a civil war where 200 people were killed In Congress, Senator Charles Sumner Criticized pro Slavery Leaders, personally Insulting Senator Andrew Pickens Butler In Response, Preston Brooks Attacked Sumner With a cane for insulting his Family Member making Brooks a Hero in the South and Sumner a Victim in the North Them Is Fighting Words
