6 Harriet Tubman Harriet Ross was born into slavery in 1819 or 1820
fearing she would be sold South she made her escape Tubman was given a piece of paper by a white neighbor with two names, and told how to find the first house on her path to freedom

7 Harriet Tubman believed to have conducted 300 persons to freedom in the North Time and again she made successful visits to the South She had a very short and pointed rule or law of her own, which implied death to any who talked of giving out and going back. Never lost a “traveler”

The white militia counterattacked and stopped the uprising. Nat Turner escaped finally captured executed on November 11, 1831. Became a symbol for slaves

11 John Brown a well known abolitionist,
planned a slave uprising that was He led a gang of people against Harper’s Ferry. His force was quickly apprehended and he was brought to trial and hung. he spoke eloquently about the evils of slavery.

12 Frederick Douglass 1817-1895 Born into slavery and escaped in 1838.
Abolitionist who embraced integration. Was an articulate spokesperson for African America rights. Considered a black “philosopher and ideologist.”

13 Fugitive Slave Act permitted the recapture and extradition of escaped slaves fines and prison sentences for people who helped runaways. Meant even North America was not safe forced runaways to flee to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and even Europe.

14 Dread Scott Case Dred Scott sued for his freedom in 1846.
Taken into free territory by his owner but returned to Missouri, a slave state, Scott argued that his earlier residency made him a free man. Finally in 1857, the Supreme Court found that Scott, as a bondsperson, was not recognized as a U.S. citizen under the Constitution, and therefore, not eligible to sue in the courts. Meant slaves were just property, not people
