Where are White Rhinos from?
They come from Africa where they live on Africa's grassy plains, where they sometimes gather in groups of as many as a dozen individuals. Under the hot African sun, white rhinos take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block.

How did the white rhino gets its name?
‘white rhino’ is that the name comes from the wide lip of the species. The white rhino has a long white lip. The black rhino has a smaller, curved lip. According to the popular telling, the early Dutch settlers appended the word ‘wijd’ to its name, meaning ‘wide’. This was anglicised as ‘white’. The irony of the thing is that the Afrikaans name is now ‘wit renoster’ or ‘white rhinoceros’.

How do Rhinos live in their environment?
Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it on the landscape. The white rhino once roamed much of sub- Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by these commercial uses. Only about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and many organizations are working to protect this much loved animal.

What kind of food to they eat?
A White Rhino eats different types of foliage (leaves) to grow its big, bulky body. The White Rhino uses its square-shaped lips to grab grass in small places. How do they protect themselves?
White rhinos have two horns, the foremost more prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year, and have been known to grow up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. Females use their horns to protect their young, while males use them to battle attackers. The white Rhino has no natural predators, despite its size and how it gets angry very easily, it is very easy for man to kill. The white rhino is usually ambushed right in the water hole. Humans are involved by hunting down rhinoceros, while other humans are trying to protect them.

Why are people killing rhinos and taking their horns?
Many believe contain aphrodisiac qualities besides being used as medicines for curing fever, stomach ailments and other diseases. Rhino horn is also much fancied by buyers from the Middle East who turn them into handles of ornamental daggers. Profits from the illegal rhino horn trade are staggering - rhino horn sells for up to Rs 1.5 million ($35,000) per kg in the international market.

Sexual maturity is reached from 5–7 years old for females, and 7– 8 years for males.

How do rhinos mate? Mating does not have a seasonal pattern, but births tend to be towards the end of the rainy season in drier environments. Males and females frequently fight during courtship, sometimes leading to serious wounds inflicted by their horns. After mating, the pair go their separate ways. A calf is born 14 to 18 months later. Although they nurse for a year, calves are able to begin eating vegetation one week after birth.

Why do birds sit on rhinos?
