Picasso’s Mixed Up World
Collages and Sketchbooks
2
Pablos’ Boredom Pablo Picasso was a great painter and originally painted realistically Then several things happened change his thinking about painting realistically The first thing that happened was he became bored with painting things from only one point of view The other thing that happened was the camera was invented. He felt that photography made painting realistically obsolete
3
A New Look So he began to experiment with different ways of looking at things. He started to paint more like African Artist did. He made things flatter and more angular. He also started to abstract his paintings.
4
A New Twist on Things He abstracted more and more, making harder sharper and bolder lines. He out lined the shapes of things rather than let the shapes imply the form He also use big blocks of color instead of shading.
5
Thinking Completely out of the Box (box of paints that is)
So Picasso became bored with even using paints to make an image. He began to experiment with cutting out and pasting down different materials to make an abstracted image. This was a totally new kind of image making, called collage.

Pablo was dancing to his own beat.
For the most part Picasso made collages of Guitars and other stringed instruments. He would mostly use neat or interesting bits of paper, and wallpapers to glue down to make the images. He would cut out different shapes that are on a guitar out of different papers and put them together to look like a guitar. For example here he cut out a figure 8 shape and then cut half off. He did this three times to make a guitar, and the shadow of the guitar.
7
Fun with Cut and Paste He would also use the wallpaper to make a background, a table for the guitar to sit on and other compositional elements.
