2 Religion versus Science
Many horror stories are based on the conflict between science and religion. Religion supports the idea that life is sacred and subject to divine laws which are outside the scope of scientists to interfere with. Scientists believe that they have the right to explore the laws of nature so they may create solutions to the problems of disease and suffering which afflict mankind. © Copyright AATE 2016

Mary Shelley conceived of the idea of her novel when holidaying in Geneva. She wrote the novel as part of a competition with her husband and his friend, Lord Byron, to see who could write the most terrifying story. The Island of Doctor Moreau was influenced by the theory of evolution as explained by Charles Darwin in his work On The Origin of the Species. Darwin theorised that mankind had evolved from simpler life forms over billions of years. H. G.
