2000 In one of the closest, contested elections on record, George W. Bush defeats Al Gore for President. Before it's over, Florida begins a recount of ballots, but the Supreme Court halts the recount.

America Strikes Back President Bush declares a war on terror.
10/7/11 the United States and Great Britain attack Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. Troops are deployed, and the Taliban government collapses. Youtube – 5:02 United States invaded the country after the September 11 attacks supported initially by close allies, and eventually by the wider NATO beginning in 2003. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda, and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. Key allies supported the U.S. from the start, including the United Kingdom. In August 2003, NATO became involved as an alliance, taking the helm of the International Security Assistance Force. US launched Operation Enduring Freedom on 7 October 2001 with the United Kingdom. The two were later joined by other forces, including the NAYO. The U.S. and its allies drove the Taliban from power and built military bases near major cities across the country. Most al-Qaeda and Taliban were not captured, escaping to neighboring Pakistan or retreating to rural or remote mountainous regions.

2002 War in Afghanistan continues, 49 U.S. troops die in the war this year. U.S. President George W. Bush signs the Homeland Security Act into law, establishing the Department of Homeland Security The largest U.S. government reorganization since the creation of the Department of Defense in 1947.

2003 President Bush announces he is ready to attack Iraq even without UN agreements. He does. In March, the U.S. and Britain launch war against Iraq. Within a month, Baghdad falls. Recalling a Governor California governor Gray Davis is ousted in a recall vote. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected in his place. Youtube :30 Youtube – 1:40 During his time as Governor, Davis made education his top priority and California spent eight billion dollars more than was required under Proposition 98 during his first term. Under Davis, California standardized test scores increased for five straight years. Davis signed the nation's first state law requiring automakers to limit auto emissions. Davis supported laws to ban assault weapons and he is also credited with improving relations between California and Mexico Davis began his tenure as Governor with strong approval ratings, but those ratings declined as voters blamed Davis for the California electricity crisis and the California budget crisis that followed the bursting of the dot-com bubble. Voters were also alienated by Davis' record-breaking fundraising efforts and negative campaigning. On October 7, 2003, he became the second Governor to be recalled in American history. Davis was succeeded by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger on November 17 after the recall election. Davis spent 1,778 days as Governor and signed 5,132 bills out of 6,244, vetoing 1,112 bills.

2004 Iraq weapons investigator David Kay resigns saying there is no evidence that Iraq ever had weapons of mass destruction – one of the main reasons Bush put forward for invading. The Senate intelligence committee criticizes the intelligence reports used to justify the war. George W. Bush is re-elected. Social networking Web site Facebook takes off.

2005 First democratic elections in Iraq, voters elect a new assembly and ratify a new Constitution. A total of 11 million people vote, about 70 percent of those eligible to vote. The number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq reaches 2,000. In August, Hurricane Katrina destroys much of the Gulf Coast, flooding New Orleans.
