8. Lake Washington
Cities in Washington near the large freshwater Lake Washington had been disposing of their treated sewage in the lake since the 40’s.
Oscillatoria Rubescens was found in 1955
O. Rubescens is an indicator bacteria, and without action, research has shown, that the lake would soon degrade to foul, smelly water that couldn’t support life.
The cities worked together to re-route sewage lines to dispose of the waste in Puget Sound where it is more diluted and less of an environmental problem.
