Forest fire protection in Poland and Europe
2
Fires destroy the environment
Burning grass and bushes is prohibited! It is one of the ways which destroys the environment. Burning grass isn't beneficial, on the contrary it causes a lot of damages. Moreover, it is dangerous for people. Each year many people die in fires caused by burning grass. Fires are the most dangerous for forests. Fires spread very rapidly and destroy trees. It takes decades for forests to grow. Polish forests are in danger of fires and this phenomenon is the most common among European countries. In the Sudety area it is even an ecological disaster.
3
Types of forest fires: Surface fires occur in peatbogs and spread rapidly from ten to twenty metres per second, Fires of soil cover these are fires during which forest cover as well as plants covering the soil burn, Fires of a single tree they occur very rarely and can be caused by the strike of thunder and they are not so dangerous, Fires of forest stands forest cover, plants of soil cover and upper branches of a tree are burnt. During a fire flames can reach from metres above the treetops, Fires of forestry cultivation fires during which young forest stands are burnt. These fires spread with the same speed as total fires.
4
Factors causing fires The factors which bring about fires:
Long-lasting droughts which cause the lack of humid of forest cover, thus it is more endangered by fire. In rare cases fires are brought about by natural phenomena, for instance by striking of thunder. About 95% of forest fires are caused by people's irresponsible behaviour such as burning bonfires and smoking in forests. Throwing away cigarette ends out of cars and trains. One of the reasons of a fire is burning meadows nearby forests.

Effects of fires The fires have a great influence on our environment. They emit gas to the air (there’s enormous carbon dioxide emissions while fires) and foul the air which we breath. They destroy our property, forests, buildings (sometimes irremediably). The fire sterilizes the ground, kills small animals living under the ground. The repeated forest fires have an influence on the amount of afforestation of countries. While forest burning thousands of ants dies. The ants play a big role in the ecological life of fields because they clear the ground. The victims are also: wild insects, frogs (their population is getting smaller and smaller year by year), hedgehogs, moles (which eat minor rodents), young hares, chicks and eggs. The flock of birds which have the breeding sites on the meadows, ditches, bushes- die.

How to prevent a forest fire?
-We shouldn’t lit a fire outside the fireplace or the places where this is allowed -We have to clean after camping trip put the fire out, throw the rubbish bottles and bags away -We have to take care about the wiring and the gas fittings -We have to be sure that our inflammable materials are in a safety place -We shouldn’t fire the grass and meadows -We have to keep the matches or lighters out of the reach of children -We shouldn’t smoke

What can we do in case of the fire?
You can disturb an arsonist but the best and more safety way is to inform the fire brigade or pollice. Let’s call Remember that rangers and fire fighters want to cooperate with us- especially when we find a source of fire. We should quickly inform the owner of the forest or these people they know what to do. Fire brigade – 998

The greatest forest fire in Polish history
About 50 people in the hospital and 3 fatalities this is the balance of The greatest forest fire in Polish history. The fire started on the 26th of August, 1992 near Kuźnia Raciborska. It was one of the hottest period of time- similar to present temperatures. It was 38 degrees Celsius and the last rain was in May. The train Raciborz-Kedzierzyn-Koźle was slowing down near the Kuźnia-Raciborska-forest district when the spark lit a fire… It was just a second.

The greatest forest fires in Europe
In 2012 there was an enormous, tragical fire by resort in Croatia. The rescue operation with fire brigade and local people started at the beginning of the fire but it was too big to put it out. The flames were spreading too fast so they couldn’t stop them. The wind was disturbing the rescue operation because it was pulling the fire to the city center including the resort where a lot of houses stayed in the flames. About 160 fire fighters took part in the operation. They decided to evacuate inhabitants and tourists from the resorts. It wasn’t a piece of cake because they were everywhere- by the sea, at the beaches, in the city, in their rooms and fire fighters couldn’t take them to the safety place at once. Happily, there was only one fatality. Not to many people were burnt so for as big fire as they had in Carotia the loss wasn’t too dangerous for people.

Fires in Greece According to statistics there were 170 fires in 72 hours in various parts of Greece with 63 fatalities. About ha of forests were burnt. Greeks needed 18 aeroplanes and 19 tanker planes to put unimaginable fast spreading fires out.
