Types of plate boundaries
2/21/17 Types of plate boundaries Objective: I will identify the three types of plate boundaries and explain the geologic processes that happen at each. PAGE 61
2
“Big Idea” for this Unit
HOW DO MAJOR GEOLOGIC FEATURES FORM?
3
Plate Boundary where two tectonic plates border one another
there are 3 types of plate boundaries
5
Divergent Boundary mantle magma is rising, plates move apart
6
Divergent Boundary can separate land masses, forming seas and oceans
8
Divergent Boundary Key features: mid-ocean ridge, rift valley, spreading center volcanoes Ex: Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Red Sea
9
Convergent Boundary magma is sinking, plates come together
subduction- one plate sinks under another due to differences in density
11
Continental-Continental (no subduction)
Key features: large folded mountains Ex: Himalaya Mountains
12
Oceanic-Continental (subduction)
Key features: trench, volcanic mountain chain Ex: Andes Mountains
13
Oceanic-Oceanic (subduction)
Key features: deep-ocean trench, volcanic island arc Ex: Japan
14
Transform Boundary does not produce magma, plates slide past each other
15
Transform Boundary Key features: earthquakes (plates do not slide smoothly), fault lines Ex: San Andres Fault
16
Output Activity (Page 60)
Complete your “Plate Boundary Chart” in detail Use your Plate Tectonic Model, class notes, and textbook pages When finished, glue/tape onto page 60. Extra credit stamps will be given tomorrow if completed in full, with color and a title.
