What? The Hudson’s Bay Company started as a fur trading company It was incorporated by the English Royal charter in 1670 and it controlled most of the fur trading in North America The current headquarters of The Hudson’s Bay Company is in Toronto, Ontario in the Simpsons Tower

Medard chouart des groseillieurs
Medard was born on 1618 in France and died in 1696 Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Medard Chouard des Groseillieurs started the company in 1670 on May 2nd Radisson is the stepbrother of Groseillieurs, Groseillieurs married Radisson’s sister, Marguerite Hayet, who became a widow when her first husband had died He was the son of Medard Chouart and Marie Poirier Not much was known about Medard Chouard des Groseillieurs’ early life but the fact that he came to Canada in 1641 When the western Indians brought back some furs from “a great river which empties into a great sea” he travelled with a partner to go search for fur The partner that he was travelling with is unknown

Pierre-esprit Radisson
Pierre was born on 1636 in France and had died in 1710 Pierre-Esprit Radisson was one of the founders of HBC and came to New France in 1651 The most important part of his life was the time he had spent with Groseillieurs fur trading Pierre was taken by the Mohawks, an First Nations tribe, he was treated nicely enough but he tried to escape twice When he was caught the first time he was severely punished and tortured, the second time however he managed to escape and sought refuge in Fort Orange where he served as a interpreter

The journey to making Hudson's bay
Radisson and Groseillieurs were denied a trading licence by the governor of New France but they kept going on to trade, sadly they got fined for it They kept trying but the governor of New France denied them They went to the English next to try and get some funding but failed to interest the New Englanders Luckily they came across a man named Colonel George Cartwright who brought them to Sir George Carteret who in turn brought them to King Charles II Prince Rupert then took charge of funding the project in 1667 They applied for a royal charter and was granted on May 2nd, 1670 Map of where they have travelled Royal Charter for HBC
