GLOBE Data Entry School Definition
Only done once unless your school moves Done when your GLOBE ID is issued

GLOBE Data Entry Study Site Definition
Once for each location at which you collect data Once for each type of data (atmosphere, hydrology, soil, etc.)

Each time you take a measurement In batches, several measurements at once

Click “Data Entry” on the GLOBE Home Page

The Data Entry page has categories for each type of measurement

X The “Site Definition” button is only for defining a school site
To define a study site, choose the category of site you wish to define

From the drop-down menu that appears, choose “Define a ….. Study Site”

Site Definition Practice School Name Enter Year, Month, and Day
Enter a name for your study site. Examples: 3rd Grade Atmosphere Site, Mrs. Smith’s class, etc.

Site Definition Don’t use this option if you have a GPS reading Enter the latitude/longitude of your study site, which you obtained with your GPS. Be sure to click “GPS” as the source of data.

Site Definition The type of information you are asked to supply will depend upon the type of site you are defining. Enter as much information as you have. If you don’t know leave it blank. If you are given a choice of entries and you choose “other,” you will have to give a definition for “other”. If you don’t know, leave it blank rather than choosing “other.

Metadata: “Data about data”
Site Definition Metadata: “Data about data” Anything unique or unusual about your site goes here. If your site is not “perfect”, it doesn’t mean your students can’t do GLOBE! It just means you have metadata to report!

When finished, click “Send Data”

If you get a “Smiley Face”….
Site Definition If you get a “Smiley Face”…. Your input has passed system checks! Congratulations! You have successfully defined your study site!

If you get an “Exclamation Point”
Site Definition If you get an “Exclamation Point” At least one of the measurement values you entered is outside of the range of values allowed for this protocol. (read the information in the box below to understand the conditions in which your data might not pass system checks). Review the following error messages and modify your data accordingly. If the data are correct as is, but are not being accepted, contact the GLOBE Help Desk Find the corresponding exclamation symbol with black text and follow its directions to correct your mistake. Keep making corrections and clicking “send data” until you get smileys!

Click “Data Entry” on the GLOBE Home Page (or from any page with a menu bar)

Choose the protocol category for the measurements you have taken
