Consequences of stress due to continually caring for and helping traumatized/suffering people Caring too much for too long This is a natural consequence and byproduct What makes us so susceptible? Empathy The intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts or attitudes of others Empathy vs Sympathy

6 Empathy vs Sympathy

7 Empathy is not bad! Empathy is necessary to do our jobs
We must understand it is a double edged sword Although it helps us better connect and help our clients, it can still impact us deeply. By understanding this, we can begin to create healthy boundaries.

8 Do I love my job? Yes- compassion fatigue No- burn out

9 The downfall I can fix this problem.
I am responsible for all outcomes. If I care enough, everything will be okay. People will appreciate everything I do for them. I will have enough resources (time, money, skills, training). I know what I am getting into. I can do it alone. Unhealthy/unsuccessful/unstable people mean I am not doing enough.
