483: NSF grants awarded 4: NSF research centers/facilities
Indiana THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Indiana in FY 2016 $157 Million: NSF funds awarded th: National ranking in NSF funds 21: NSF-funded institutions 483: NSF grants awarded 4: NSF research centers/facilities "An innovation ecosystem consists of many integrated components, including academic research, the business and investor community, industry and the commercial marketplace. The NSF funding was critical to starting and nurturing the work that led to [Ziro] and resulted in a success story." - Karthik Ramani, Professor at Purdue University and co-founder and chief scientist of the company ZeroUI EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN INDIANA The NSF is funding research at the University of Notre Dame on the effects of Hurricane Matthew on building infrastructure in Haiti. The goal is to determine the vulnerabilities exposed by extreme weather to improve the design for buildings in the U.S. Vibronix, based in Lafayette, has received a Small Business Innovation Research award from the NSF to develop a tool that provides real-time visual guidance with sub-millimeter accuracy during surgery. This will be especially beneficial for surgically removing breast tumors. With smartphones becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s world, researchers at Indiana University are using NSF funding to explore practical privacy controls and feedback mechanisms that allow for people to better control the flow of their information. Indiana Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Indiana received $27 million in NSF educational funding in FY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN INDIANA Researchers at Butler University are using NSF funding to create science learning experiences in public spaces across the city. The goal is to increase opportunities for learning and help to develop the next generation of urban science museums. The University of Notre Dame has received funding from the NSF to study children’s early understanding of math. They are specifically investigating what the factors are for differences in understanding math and the long-term implications of a poor understanding of math. Teachers for a New Decade is a NSF-funded project at Indiana University that aims to help 60 individuals become middle and high school science teachers in the local community. The NSF-funded TRAILS (Teachers and Researchers Advancing Integrated Lesson in STEM) project at Purdue University is working to better understand the practices that increase students’ motivations and capacities to pursue STEM careers. Courtesy: “Every year our country sees the creation of millions of new jobs in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. If we are not doing everything we can to prepare our students for careers in these innovative fields, we are failing them.” - Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett “The [Indiana STEM Action] Coalition believes that our students need strong STEM skills for almost all jobs – not just for STEM careers – to remain competitive in the 21st century global economy,” - Dr. Paul Ainslie, Managing Director of the I-STEM Resource Network Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 1527 Eighteenth Street, NW Washington, DC
