NIH defines underrepresented minorities (URMs) as: American Indians or Alaska Natives Blacks or African Americans Hispanics or Latinos Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders Asians are NOT considered URMs, despite facing stereotype threat and racism in STEM All race/ethnicity categories aggregate complex, heterogeneous groups Masks the individual needs of human beings under the stereotypical idea of a “[insert race/ethnicity]” person
