16 Olympic Sports According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the Roman Hercules), a son of Greek god Zeus The first games were held in 776 BC in Olympia Greece The only event was a run of 192 meters or 210 yards

17 Olympic Sports Several years later, other events such as discus, javelin, jumping and wrestling were added In 393 AD Roman emperor Theodosius I abolished the Games because of their pagan influences

18 The Revival More than 2,500 years later in 1890, a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin began the revival of the Games He organized a meeting with 79 delegates They represented 9 countries Organized a committee to plan the games

19 The Revival In April of 1896, Athens was chosen for the revival of the Olympic Games Contestants were not chosen by nation Athletes traveled at their own expense Events included pole vaulting, sprints, weight lifting, swimming and more Approximately 300 athletes from 13 countries participated

To contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sports practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play
