1 Causes of the Dust Bowl By Jake Concannon and Thomas McFadden
By Jake Concannon and Thomas McFadden H/R: Worked with each other to collect the information on the topic

2 What Was the Dust Bowl The Dust Bowl occurred during the 1930’s and was one of the contributing factors to the length of the Great Depression. After investigation during Roosevelt’s time in office, it was determined that a combination of drought and bad farming techniques were the cause of the event. Farmers were doing things such as farming on grazing lands.

3 What Was the Dust Bowl cont.
The land known as the Great Plains of the United States were the areas most heavily effected. The event was so catastrophic that many people picked up and headed west to California.

4 GIS and the Dust Bowl After GIS imagery was produced to further delve into what caused the Dust Bowl, it was found that it was in fact, not due to bad farming techniques. After years of low rainfall and rivers and streams being washed up, the land was left unsuitable for farming.

5 GIS of Affected Areas of Dust Bowl

6 Did This Change Our Thoughts?
Yes and no. It definitely changed our opinion that the Dust Bowl was in fact no due to over farming. We had always been taught growing up that over farming was the cause of the Dust Bowl.

7 Dorothea Lange

8 Dorothea Lange Dorothea Lange was the photographer made famous by her “Migrant Mother” photograph taken in 1936 in Nipomo, California. The woman in the photo was Florence Thompson. She was a 32-year old mother of 7 that was the iconic figure of those who moved out west due to the Dust Bowl. Her family had been living on frozen vegetables and birds that her children had killed. Her husband died 4 years earlier due to tuberculosis, leaving her to raise her children on her own in such tough times.

9 Modern Day Droughts

10 Modern Day Droughts Has depicted on the map of the United States, the areas currently in concern for drought are California, southern Oregon, and western Nevada. The reason for this drought is due to a high pressure ridge that sits off the coast of the state of California. As cold fronts move east, they hit the high pressure zone and move north towards Oregon and Washington, dumping all the rain in those states.

11 Vanishing Civilizations due to Drought

12 Indus Valley Civilization
The Indus Valley civilization was located in modern day Pakistan. The civilization left behind impressive engineered ruin, indicating an advanced society. Surrounded by desert, it is very possible that an event such as a drought caused the society to collapse and, in turn, cause the Indus Valley civilization to collapse.

13 The Nabateans

14 The Nabateans The Nabateans civilization was founded in an area surrounded by rock and sand. Because of their ability to engineering their entire city into the rock that inhabited their land, it has been concluded that it was a fairly advanced society. Their environment also made it hard to bring in a steady food and water source. Because the lack of these essentials, it is believed that a drought possibly could have sent this civilization over the edge.

15 The Mayans

16 The Mayans At first, it was unclear as to why the Mayans civilization collapsed. After scientists found a rare gem in a cave, they concluded that the area that the civilization presided in was under a large time during the final years of the empire’s existence. This makes sense because such a progressive society with pyramids, a calendar, and a sophisticated writing system just suddenly stopped for no apparent reason.

17 “Water is the Oil of This Century”
From the beginning of time to present day and probably into the future, there are many uses of water that will continue to stay the same. For one, people will always use water for consumption. Also, people have always used water for hygiene. These things will continue to be used in the future.

19 “Water is the Oil of This Century”
As time progressed, human beings started to use water for innovative things such as transportation and energy. Today, waterways are a constant source of transportation and energy, allowing boats to carry freight to and from industrial sites and to house dams in order to provide energy to nearby towns or cities.

21 “Water is the Oil of This Century”
What does water have in store for us in the future? I believe that humans will find a way to consume the energy made by waves on the coast to power cities and towns. This energy is constant and will always be reliable no matter what time of the day, temperature, weather, or season.
