Plate Tectonics & the Ocean
2
What are Plate Tectonics?
3
What are Plate Tectonics?
A theory that separates the Earth’s crust into different plates which are all dynamic

8
Exploring Seafloor Spreading
Formation of new oceanic crust at divergent boundaries

Exploring Seafloor Spreading
10
How do plate tectonics and the ocean relate/affect each other?
11
Mid Ocean Ridges Underwater Volcanoes Tsunamis
12
Transform Boundaries cause Earthquakes
How does this affect the ocean?
13
Earthquakes to Tsunamis
Large shallow earthquakes Fault or Epicenter near the ocean floor Magnitude of 7.5 or larger causes destructive tsunamis Energy from the earthquake is transferred through the ocean water Shape of the seafloor is also linked to destructive tsunamis (the steeper the incline the higher the tsunami-H2O displacement)

Can you outrun a Tsunami?
Helpful Forumulas for Preparation: 1. X m/s * (1m/1,000km) * (60s/1min) * (60min/1hr) = X km/hr distance/time=velocity Credit: NOAA Sea Grant, Oregon State University
15
Scenario There was an earthquake in Seward, Alaska large enough to produce a tsunami at an ocean depth of 4,000m. Calculate the speed of the tsunami at this depth.
16
Help your friends… You have one friend in Kodiak, Alaska and another friend in Kauai Island, Hawaii. You want to call them to let them know when the tsunami will reach them so you will need to figure out the time it will take for the tsunami to travel to each friend. (Hint: search distance of the epicenter to the location of your friend.) Who did you call first? Why?
