Sun West Park – Pasco County, Florida Ms. Reiter was environmental manager responsible for regulatory permitting and design for coastal park, including boat launch facilities, kayaking trails, parking areas, fishing pier, temporary docking, swimming beaches, and interpretive nature/recreational trails. On-site mitigation area design included seagrass transplanted areas, macroalgae and marsh plants. This project directly impacted a total area of wetlands and aquatic resources of 27.4 acres of submerged aquatic resources associated with channel improvements. The project was approved by the Board of Trustees (Governor and Cabinet). The project included new navigational channel dredging along with a significant amount of seagrass impacts. The complex mitigation plan included seagrass habitat creation, estuarine wetland restoration, freshwater mitigation and the redesign/resuse of old limestone mine pits. The park design included the following components: Expand the use of an existing dredge channel, add one boat ramp with 7 lanes, 250 car/trailer parking spaces, manatee observation tower with educational kiosks, interpretive nature trail, and swimming beach. SunWest park is the largest new navigational channel project ever reviewed by the FDEP Southwest District.
