3. How do we define an eclipse?
Eclipse- when the moon, sun, and earth are all aligned in a straight line and blocks the light from reaching the other object or casts a shadow on it.

Shadows:
Umbra – total darkness, inner part of shadow
Penumbra – partial darkness (light grey) outer part of shadow
Eclipse As the moon revolves around Earth, it usually passes above or below Earth’s shadow. When the moon passes directly through Earth’s shadow, sunlight is blocked from reaching the moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. A lunar eclipse can only occur during a full-Moon phase. A solar eclipse is an eclipse of the sun and this occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow on Earth. A solar eclipse can only occur during a new-Moon phase. Solar and Lunar eclipses do not occur at every full-Moon and new-Moon phase because the Moon’s orbit is tilted 5º.
