3 How do we define an eclipse?
Eclipse- when the moon, sun, and earth are all aligned in a straight line and blocks the light from reaching the other object or casts a shadow on it. the Moon passes in-between the Earth and Sun or when the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. Shadows: Umbra – total darkness, inner part of shadow Penumbra – partial darkness (light grey) outer part of shadow Eclipse As the moon revolves around Earth, it usually passes above or below Earth’s shadow. When the moon passes directly through Earth’s shadow, sunlight is blocked from reaching the moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. A lunar eclipse can only occur during a full-Moon phase. A solar eclipse is an eclipse of the sun and this occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow on Earth. A solar eclipse can only occur during a new-Moon phase. Solar and Lunar eclipses do not occur at every full-Moon and new-Moon phase because the Moon’s orbit is tilted 5º. Lunar eclipse: when the full moon moves into Earth’s shadow Partial Lunar Eclipse (penumbra) Umbra Penumbra Full Moon Earth SUN Total Lunar Eclipse (umbra) The Earth casts its shadow on the Moon causing the Moon to look orange or red due to the refraction of light.

6 Why don’t eclipses occur every month?
Eclipses do not happen every month because the moon’s orbit is tilted 5°. Solar Eclipse (new moon) Lunar Eclipse (full moon) At which position would an observer see a solar eclipse and at which position would you see a lunar eclipse?

High Tide Low Tide Tides are cyclic and predictable Occur about every 6 hrs and 12 mins Between two high tides or two low tides is12 hrs & 24 mins tide cycle will take about 24 hrs and 50 mins (50 minute delay) Tides – rise and fall of the ocean water due to the gravitational pull between the moon and sun
