AIM: Phases of the Moon Aim: Earth and the moon interactions Do Now:
Why do celestial objects “Appear” to move? -Because the Earth rotates
2
I. The Moon The moon is Earths only natural satellite.
The moon orbits around the Earth in 27.3 days.
3
II. Moon Origin Theory - An object the size of Mars impacted Earth ejecting a huge quantity of material which combined and now orbits the Earth as our moon
4
III. Phases of the Moon Phases result from the revolution of the moon and the sunlight that is reflected. Waxing – an increasing in the visible portion of the moon (from the right). Waning – a decreasing in the visible portion of the moon (from the right).
5
**Half of the moon is always lit by the sun, but the portion we see depends on the angle.
EARTH Sun’s Rays
7
III. Eclipses (named for what is being blocked)
Solar Eclipse: When the moon moves between Earth and the Sun. The moon blocks the Sun and casts a shadow on Earth.
8
View of moons shadow on Earth from space
View of the Sun blocked by the moon from Earth
9
Lunar Eclipse: When the moon moves into Earths shadow cast by the sun, the moon appears to disappear.
10
IV. Tides Ocean tides result from the gravitational attraction between the Earth and moon as well as the sun.
