1
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH INDICATORS
Dr.MUSTAQUE AHMED MBBS,MD(COMMUNITY MEDICINE), FELLOWSHIP IN HIV/AIDS
2
objectives To understand why mother and child are considered 1unit.
Objectives of MCH services To describe the important MCH indicators and its formula for calculation.
3
MOTHER & CHILD Major group of population – approx 35% Vulnerable group
Much of mortality and morbidity preventable
4
MOTHER & CHILD -1 UNIT During antenatal period, foetus is part of mother. Child health related to mother’s health. Diseases of mother affect foetus. Child depend on mother for feeding. Mental and social development, primary socialization depend on mother.
5
MCH SERVICES REFERS TO PROMOTIVE PREVENTIVE CURATIVE
REHABILITATIVE HEALTH CARE FOR MOTHER AND CHILD NOTE-CHIDREN < 5YRS OF AGE AND WOMEN IN THE REPRODUCTIVE AGE GROUP(15-49Y)
6
OBJECTIVES Reduction of morbidity and mortality rates for both mothers and children. Promotion of reproductive health. Promotion of physical and physiological development of child within the family.
7
COMPONENTS OF MCH SERVICES
Maternal health-ANC,INC,PNC Child health Family planning School health Handicapped children Care of children in special settings such as day care centres.
8
INDICATORS OF MCH CARE COMMONLY USED INDICATORS ARE
MATERNAL MORTABILY RATE MORTALITY IN INFANCY PERINATAL MORTALITY RATE Neonatal mortality rate Post neonatal mortality rate INFANT mortality rate 1-4 years mortality rate Under 5 child mortality rate OTHERS % of antenatal care received % of pregnant women who received TT & IFA % children cover under immunization
10
MATERNAL DEATH The death of woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of duration and site of pregnancy from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management but not from accident or incidental causes
11
MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE
DEFINED as the no. of maternal death per 100,000 live births for the same period MMR= Total no. of female death due to complication of preg, child birth or within 40 days of delivery from puerperal causes in an area during a given area Total no of live births in the same area and year
13
Perinatal mortality definition
Perinatal period extends from 28th week of gestation to less than 7 days of life, after birth. The term “perinatal mortality” includes both late feotal deaths (stillbirths) and early neonatal deaths.
14
Perinatal mortality rate
World Health Organization defines perinatal mortality as the "number of stillbirths and deaths in the first week of life per 1,000 total births, late fetal deaths (28 weeks of gestation and more) PMR = early neonatal deaths (first week) in one year × live births in the same year •
15
NEONATAL MORTALITY RATE :
it is applied to deaths occurring during the neonatal period, commencing at birth and ending 28 completed days after birth. No. of deaths of children under 28 days of age in a given year = —————————————————x1000 total live births in the same year
16
POST NEONATAL MORTALITY RATE
it is applied to deaths occurring from 28 days of life to under one year of age. no. of deaths of children between 28 days and one year of age in a given year =——————————————— —x1000 total no. of live births in the same year
17
INFANT MORTALITY RATE IMR is defined as the ratio of infant deaths registered in a given year to the total number of live births registered in the same year. It is expressed as a rate per thousand live births. IMR= No. of deaths of children less than 1 year of age in a year × No. of live births in same year
19
1-4 YEAR mortality rate DEFINATION- it is the number of deaths of children aged 1-4 years per 1000 children in the same age group in a given year. no. of deaths of children aged 1-4 years during a year = —————————————————X 1000 total no. of children aged 1-4 years at the middle of the year
20
UNDER FIVE MORTALITY RATE
UNDER FIVE MORTALITY RATE- Death of children between birth and exactly 5 years of age, expressed per 1,000 live births. no.of deaths of children less than 5 years of age in a given year = ———————————------———x 1000 no. of live births in the same year
