2008/25: holistic and comprehensive national multi- sectoral approaches to preventing and combating illicit international trafficking in forest products, including timber, wildlife, and other forest biological resources 2011/36: invited Member States to consider making illicit trafficking in endangered species of wild fauna and flora a serious crime and requested UNODC to provide technical assistance to States 2012/19: recognized the involvement of Transnational Criminal Organizations in all aspects of “crimes that have a significant impact on the environment” and urged Member States to consider addressing different forms and manifestations of such crime

7 Regional context Environmental crimes (mainly timber-related crimes) generate ¼ of the total revenues for organized crime in Southeast and the Pacific. More than the GDP of come countries in the region. Nonetheless the criminal justice systems in every country still treat it a low priority 7

Illegal trade of wildlife and timber is regional security threat that cannot be overlooked any longer A global priority identified by UN organs and Member States To Increase attention by National Law Enforcement agencies (penalties, convictions, etc) To increase sophistication of investigative techniques (Anti-corruption, Anti-money Laundering, etc) To increase level of international cooperation through the use of UNTOC
