1 Digitising European Industry
Platforms and Pilots Arian Zwegers European Commission DG CONNECT #DigitiseEU

2 Digitising European Industry COM(2016) 180 final
Strengthening leadership in key parts of the digital value chain:

3 Partnerships Digital Value Chain
Autonomous driving Robotics Micro-electronics Focus on building blocks Increase role of PPPs For actual applications, you need to bring different technologies together E.g. connected automated driving: vision, robotics, AI, 5G How does it all come together? How does it all work together? You need to design that, you need to specify that Middleware, integration of different technologies Some functionalities added, e.g. data aggregation Interfaces are made available, APIs Serving users and application providers  platforms Cloud computing Healthy aging

4 Digital Industrial Platforms What do we mean?
A place or opportunity for public discussion e.g. European Platform of National Initiatives An operating system that integrates different technologies and various applications and services Online platforms in the consumer world e.g. Facebook, Nest, Android Industrial platforms in the business world The world platform has a different meaning which depends on the context it is used in. Before moving forward, it is important to clarify what do we mean by platform in the context of WG2. A digital industrial platform can be an essential part of a reference or system architecture. Platforms are like operating systems that bring together different technologies, applications and services via clearly specified interfaces. They open up data, make it accessible, and allow third-parties to develop applications on top. They connect different stakeholders, such as users and application developers. In different ways and to varying degrees they may take in: a community role an infrastructure role a data role

7 Digital Industrial Platforms Alignment of R&I efforts
EU actors join forces along common interests Future global standards & platforms driven by interests of EU actors Focus investments on: Integration of key digital technologies Digital industrial platforms, reference architectures, … Reference implementations, large-scale piloting, experimentation environments Ecosystem building and standardisation Go alone  small market. Go together  big market Need to agree with many different stakeholders / organisations EU companies should take the lead Specify reference architectures, including platforms Develop a reference implementation of the platform Validate via Large-Scale Piloting Increase take-up, build ecosystem Standardise specifications Build on what is available in Member States Connected Smart Factories, Agriculture, Health, Energy, Construction

8 Digital Industrial Platforms Pooling Investments
Regional Investments Close-to-reality experimentation in xxx model factory Member States Investments Large scale experimentation in yyy lab Best practice Experimentation in zzz lab Development and integration of platforms, reference architectures, … EU Investments FoF/SPIRE/ ECSEL / … Best practice Experimentation in xyz lab SME testing facility at zyx digital innovation hub Real production OEM x with supply chain Industrial Investments
