1 PERSUASIVE WRITING TEKS 7.18 A-C

2 What is persuasion? Persuasion is convincing someone to agree with your opinion. There are 3 main ways to appeal to someone: Pathos, Ethos and Logos.

3 Pathos Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Examples: "If we don’t move soon, we’re all going to die! Can’t you see how dangerous it would be to stay?“ "Don’t be the last person on the block to have their lawn treated – you don’t want to be the laughing stock of your community!"

4 Pathos Examples "You’ll make the right decision because you have something that not many people do: you have heart.“ "After years of this type of disrespect from your boss, countless hours wasted, birthdays missed… it’s time that you took a stand.“ "You will never be satisfied in life if you don’t seize this opportunity. Do you want to live the rest of your years yearning to know what would have happened if you just jumped when you had the chance?“ (first commercial of the girl only) (different language but has subtitles) (dad is a liar)

5 Ethos Ethos is an appeal to ethics (moral character), and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Examples: As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.“ "Based on the dozens of archaeological expeditions I’ve made all over the world, I am confident that those potsherds are Mesopotamian in origin."

6 Examples of Ethos "The veterinarian says that an Australian shepherd will be the perfect match for our active lifestyle." "If his years as a Marine taught him anything, it’s that caution is the best policy in this sort of situation." "Our expertise in roofing contracting is evidenced not only by our 100 years in the business and our staff of qualified technicians, but in the decades of satisfied customers who have come to expect nothing but the best." "Doctors all over the world recommend this type of treatment.“ (Allstate 1st one) (truck to love)

7 Logos Logos is an appeal to logic (reason), and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Examples: "The data is perfectly clear: this investment has consistently turned a profit year-over-year, even in spite of market declines in other areas.“ "History has shown time and again that absolute power corrupts absolutely."

8 Logos Examples http://examples. yourdictionary
He has a track record of success with this company, culminating in some of our most acclaimed architecture to date and earning us Firm of the Year nine times in a row.“ "You don’t need to jump off a bridge to know that it’s a bad idea. Why then would you need to try drugs to know if they’re damaging? That’s plain nonsense." (Geiko) (Kaboom)

9 How do we use persuasion?
Essays- Persuasive essays are written to persuade the reader to adopt a certain action or point of view. Give the class an example of a persuasive essay.

10 How do we use persuasion?
Reviews- these evaluate items such as books and restaurants. The critic (person doing the review) states their opinion on why people should or shouldn’t spend money or time on that specific item or place. Have the class read an example of a restaurant review, book review, or both time permitting.

Movie trailers use various techniques to convince the public to see a particular film.

18 Examples of successful movie advertising
You are now going to watch trailers for 5 films. As you watch each trailer, write down the things you like and that appeal to you. Do you think the trailer contributed to the success of each movie? What type of appeal did each one use? Take a few notes on each clip.

19 Watch the following 5 trailers
(Sing Trailer #3) (Trolls Trailer #1) (Despicable Me #3 Trailer) (Zootopia) (Jungle Book)

20 Assignment Now that you have watched the movie clips and taken notes, be ready to select one of them and complete the following: Complete the Persuasion Map over the movie using your notes. Create a movie poster for the movie. Remember posters are bright, colorful, and draw the consumer’s attention to the movie. The front of the poster needs to have the movie title, and something about the movie on it. It must be neat and colorful and take up the entire front side of the sheet. The back of the poster in 1-2 paragraphs tell me why I need to go see the movie or why I shouldn’t go see it. Be specific. Also, identify the type of appeal you are using in your paragraphs.
