Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Sang Hyun Cho
Psalms 69 1 Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. 3 I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. 4 Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. 5 You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you. 6 May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the LORD Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel.

Today’s verses Acts 5 1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet. 3 Then Peter said, 'Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God." 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
11
Today’s verses Acts 5 6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. 7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, 'Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?' 'Yes,' she said, 'that is the price.' 9 Peter said to her, 'How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.' 10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
12
Today’s verses Acts 5 12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.
13
Today’s verses Acts 5 17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 20 'Go, stand in the temple courts,' he said, 'and tell the people the full message of this new life.' 21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin-the full assembly of the elders of Israel-and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported,
14
Today’s verses Acts 5 23 'We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.' 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this. 25 Then someone came and said, 'Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.' 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them. 27 Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.
15
Today’s verses Acts 5 28 "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name," he said. "Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood." 29 Peter and the other apostles replied: 'We must obey God rather than men! 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead-whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.' 33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.
16
Today’s verses Acts 5 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed them: 'Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.
17
Today’s verses Acts 5 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.' 40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.

This Week’s Conversation
A: I am really upset that my boss often makes fun of me being a Christian. B: I am sorry to hear that. A: It’s really painful to face persecution in front of other co-workers. B: I can certainly understand it. However, the Bible says that Christians are bound to be persecuted because the world is ruled by Satan and Satan gets irritated by godly people. A: Really? Then I must have been irritating Satan. B: Sure. You must be doing the right thing. Jesus even said that you should be happy if you are persecuted for the name of Jesus. A: Oh really? Then I should be happy that I am being persecuted for the sake of Jesus. B: Correctly stated. You shouldn’t be discouraged at all. You should be joyful, instead.
22
Next Week’s Conversation
A: Have you encountered someone who is so indifferent about the gospel? B: Oh, sure! I have seen many! No matter what I say to them they don’t seem to care about the message. A: Exactly. Even though the message is crystal clear, it cannot penetrate their callous heart. B: What can be done about these people? A: Only thing I can think of is to pray for them. B: Right. I agree. We should pray for those who are indifferent about the gospel that someday their heart will soften and receive the message. A: Let’s pray for them together. B: Yes, let’s pray together.

The early church pattern for evangelism: Productivity
(Acts 5: 29-42) Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. (Acts 5:41-42)
24
Summary from last week The early church pattern for evangelism:
Purity Power Persecution Persistence Productivity To convicting preaching there are but three possible reactions. Violent hostility (5:33): The authorities Tolerant indecision (5:34-40): Pharisee named Gamaliel, Saving acceptance (5:41-42): The apostles
25
34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while Some react to a convicting presentation of the gospel not with open hostility, but with indifference. Such a one was a certain Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law. He was easily the most prominent rabbi of that time and one of the greatest of all antiquity. He was the grandson of another prominent rabbi, Hillel, and his successor as leader of the liberal wing of the Pharisees. Galmaliel stood up in the Assembly and gave orders to put the apostles outside for a short time.
26
He then warned his fellow members of the Sanhedrin.
He then warned his fellow members of the Sanhedrin. Unlike the Sadducees, the Pharisees accepted both the miraculous and the sovereignty of God. Gamaliel’s counsel reflects his belief that God was in control of events. He then offers two illustrations before driving home his main point.
27
36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. The details Luke gives about Theudas’ revolt differ markedly from Josephus’s account. Josephus suggests, for example, that he had a far larger following than a mere four hundred men. Since Theudas was a common name, it is most likely that two different people are in view. No such controversy surrounds the identification of Gamaliel’s second example, Judas of Galilee. He led a revolt against the census ordered by Quirinius (A.D. 6-7). The Zealots, to which Jesus’ disciple Simon had belonged, trace their origin to him. Like Theudas, he too perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.
28
38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone
38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. While the counsel seemed wise to the Sanhedrin, the notion that whatever succeeds has God’s blessing is false. Cults and false religions in our day have millions of followers. Gamaliel was a pragmatist-a poor substitute for being a good biblical scholar. Such lethargy on his part is not commendable in light of what he knew of the Scripture and what he knew of the work of Jesus and the power of the apostles in His name. The flogging was criminally unjust and done to frighten them. Apparently Gamaliel had no problem with the whipping, again revealing his indifference.
29
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. The apostles typify those who accept the gospel message. Far from being embittered or disillusioned at their suffering, they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for his name. That they were persecuted for Christ’s sake showed that they possessed the Holy Spirit. Undaunted by the Council’s actions, every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. The early church understood the pattern for effective evangelism. By consistently practicing that pattern, they turned their world upside down. At the very time they were experiencing the most furious opposition, and some tolerant indecision, their number was constantly increasing. As Paul told the Corinthians, such preachers “are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life” (2 Cor. 2:15-16)
