1 Think First When you enter class turn in your safety contract in the appropriate basket in the back of the room. Turn to the first page of your composition book. Title this page “Chemistry Notes.” skip another two pages and date the upper left corner of the right page. Title this page “Think First” and do the following: List as many units of measurement in SI as you can remember (also known as the old metric system). AND show how you might convert from one measurement to another.

2 Organizing Data Measurement: Système Internationale d’Unitès
Base units, pg. 26, Table 2-1 Range of units, pg. 26, Table 2.2 Try this then check your answer with a neighbor: Convert 20.2 g into kg Convert 2.4 L into mL

3 Organizing Data Scientific notation: a number between 1 and 10; and ten raised to a power (exponent). Ex., 6.02 x 1023 Adding and subtracting: make sure the exponents are the same before doing the calculating. Try this then check your answer with your neighbor (2.70 x 107) + (15.6 x 106) (4.39 x 104) – (5.22 x 105)

4 Organizing Data Scientific Notation continued:
Multiplying and dividing: For multiplication, multiply the first factors then add the exponents. For division, divide the first factors then subtract the exponents. After doing the calculation change to correct scientific notation format if needed. Try this then check your answer with your neighbor: (4 x 102 cm) x (1 x 108 cm) ( 4 x 10-3 g) ÷ (2 x 10-2 g)

5 Organizing Data Significant figures: recording precise measurements; all the known digits and one estimated digit. Know the rules listed on page 39. Try this then check your answer with your neighbor Determine the number of significant figures in each measurement: 508.0 L x 105 kg mL s

6 Organizing Data Precision and Accuracy: pg. 36
Precision: how close a series of measurements are to one another. Accuracy: how close a measured value is to an accepted value.

7 Organizing Data Representing data in tables and graphs:
Tables organize data when recording measurements Graphs help visualize the data in order to better understand patterns and trends. Circle Graphs Bar Graphs Line Graphs Try this then check your answer with your neighbor: What is the best kind of graph to show the mass of different kinds of metals of the same volume?

8 Organizing data 1. Complete the Organizing Data worksheet on your own paper. 2. When you are done I will come to your desk and score and record your paper. Then place it in your notebook. Return your handout to the stool in the front of the room. 3. Finish by ______ 4. If you finish early, read over the chapter two sections in the text that we covered today.

9 Exit Task Put an “X” in the numbered section on the board in each of the categories from today’s lesson to rate your ability. 1 = I’m really bad at this. 2 = I can do a little in this area. 3 = I think I know enough and can do the work in this area. 4 = I am confident that I know and can do most all of the work in this area.
