Before Namibia’s independence in 1990
WHERE DID WE START? Before Namibia’s independence in 1990 All trade via South Africa No connections to regional neighbours Limited knowledge & trade with SADC No direct shipping connections to the world Zero Corridor /Transit traffic

GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION AFTER INDEPENDENCE
Government invested in major transport infrastructure to link Namibia with the rest of the neighbouring countries: Ports development (Walvis Bay[new container terminal and SADC Gateway port] and Proposed deepening of port of Lüderitz and construction of new port at Angra Point]) Rail developments, (Links with Angola, Botswana (proposed TKR), Zambia (proposed Grootfontein –Rundu - Katima ) Road developments (Links with Angola, Botswana and Zambia) Air linkage development ,RSA, Botswana, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Germany, Qatar, Ethiopia, Holland. Proposed air links with Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria on the charts; Optimize unique location of Namibia and to establish new trade routes to link Namibia with rest of the SADC region Increased important role of transport & logistics as % of GDP

LOGISTICS MASTER PLAN (Expected roles & objective) Provide future image of Namibia as logistics hub especially the land locked countries in the SADC region Establish development framework & strategies Identify list of strategic projects Identify key policy measures Create a set of action plans including, allocation of resources Feasibility studies Implementation ( team “Logistics Namibia” unit established to drive the process)

NATIONAL PROJECTS IN PROGRESS & PROPOSED
New Container Terminal (2018) for the port of Walvis Bay New SADC Gateway Port for land locked SADC countries. Dryports: Botswana, Zimbabwe & Zambia in operation. DRC will be offered a Dryport soon. One Stop Border Posts (Buitepos) between Namibia and Botswana. Rail upgrades WalvisBay to Tsumeb in line with SADC requirements of 18.5 tonne/axle load; Lüderitz to Aus completed except a 40 km stretch from Aus – Sandveraar which needs upgrading. Completion of railway line from Tsumeb to Oshikango to link with Angola;)
