What does the SAT Measure?
How prepared students are for college reading, analyzing and comprehending challenging literature and informational text How effectively students can revise and edit a variety of texts for both content and conventions How effectively students use math skills to solve problems in science, social studies and career-related contexts How students analyze texts through reading and writing How students analyze data via graphs, tables, charts, etc. How well students understand words in context and how word choice shapes meaning and tone
3
How can a student best prepare for the test?
Take the most challenging courses available, and actively engage in those classes. Continue to develop and focus on the college and career readiness skills: Reading comprehension Writing Analysis of text and data Problem solving
4
How do the recent changes benefit the student?
As of March 2016
5
Learning, Not Memorizing
The redesigned SAT will require students to have a stronger command of fewer topics. No more “cramming” to learn vocabulary students soon forget will not be a part of the redesigned SAT. Students will be asked to apply deep understanding of the skills and concepts most important for college and career readiness.
6
Connection to Classroom Learning and Experience
The new SAT is closely connected to standard classroom experience, and rewards focused work and the development of valuable, durable knowledge, skills, and understandings. The questions and approaches will be more familiar because they will be modeled on the best work of classroom teachers.
7
Rights-only Scoring Scoring for the new test will be based only on questions that students answer correctly. There is no point deduction for wrong answers. This encourages students to give the best answer for every question rather than skip questions about which they are unsure.
8
Free Resources for Practice and Review
In the months leading up to the test, students will have access to free resources that introduce them to the SAT and give them a chance to enhance their preparation with targeted review and authentic practice. The College Board is partnering with Khan Academy to provide free practice materials that will be personalized, interactive, and engaging to help students prepare for the redesigned SAT. This particular course has been designed based upon the Khan Academy program.
