Breakout.EDU Mary Beth Youse Wilmington University TLT Symposium 2017
Reveal Content Mary Beth Youse Wilmington University TLT Teachers Learning with Technology Symposium 2017 Breakout.EDU is a trending way for students to learn and have fun doing it. Did anyone attend “Escape the Room” event? Well, this sort of works the same way! “At its simplest, Breakout EDU takes the appeal of the “escape room,” a recreational team sport in which a group of people use their wits to break out of a locked room, and turns it inside out. Instead of a locked room, teams must figure out how to get inside a tightly locked box. “ Breakout is an immersive learning game for the classroom that can be played either in a physical setting, or digitally. Students read a scenario and search for clues in order to unlock the locks. Most times they are racing against the clock, or it can be set up to go across a prescribed # of days. The best educational Breakouts are designed carefully to reveal learning, to reveal content, to reveal a discovery! “Once you purchases a kit {or makes your own box], teachers and students need not buy anything more. They can simply modify the hardware to suit what they want to teach.” CEO of the company, Adam Bellow says, “We look at ourselves as the platform,” Bellow said. “We are Nintendo — you build whatever cartridges you want.”(2016)
