1 Indo US Dialog on Water Equipment & Chemicals Standards
Rajesh Sharma, Chairman, CII Water Equipment Division, MASCON 1st Digital Video Conference June 9, 2009 Washington New Delhi Mumbai

2 1.0 Why Water Equipment needs Standards?
All processes, equipments and systems will have to collectively meet water quality standards through a combination of deploying different equipments, chemicals and processes. Therefore, all standards would need to be compiled and made available to all stakeholders

3 2.0 Illustrative List - Water Treatment Components -
R.O Membranes/UF Membranes (various sizes) Ion Exchange Resins Booster Pumps (various sizes) Pressure Vessels Connectors/Valves Tubing / Gaskets UV Lamps Water Treatment Chemicals Filter Housings Activated Carbon / Carbon Block All other water treatment media

4 2.1 Possible Categories of Water Equipment
Potable Water Small and Domestic Purifiers Point of Use and Point of Entry Water Purifiers Commercial Water Plants Others

5 2.2 Standards required for.,
Materials safety No contaminants to be produced by any product Components used should not leach any toxic substances / contamination. Structural integrity should be able to withstand pressure rating. Product information – accurate information to consumer Treated water quality testing procedure Testing for guaranteed parameters

9 - Exports/Imports Regulations-
3.2 Type of Data 1 - Exports/Imports Regulations- Exports from India to USA Feedback from Exporters Currently applicable administrative, technical and legal frameworks Imports from USA to India Indian regulations Mandatory certification if any for Customs /Excise clearance We need at least a month to collate this data

10 3.3 Type of Data 2 - Existing Standards in India -
IS Part 1 : 62 Method of sampling and test (Physical and Chemical) for water and waste water rev.1 IS 3076: 1985 Specification for Low Density Polyethylene Pipes for Potable Water Supplies IS 4984 :1995 Specification for high Density Polyethylene Pipes for Potable Water Supplies IS 4985:2000 Unplasticized PVC Pipes for Potable Water Supplies – Specification Active IS 8188:1999 Treatment of water for cooling towers=code of practice IS 7634:Part 1 & 2:1975 Code of practice for plastic pipes work for potable water supplies IS 7634:Part 3:2003 Plastic pipe selection, handling, storage & installation for Potable Water Supplies IS 8360:Part 1,2 & 3:1977 Specification for fabricated high density polyethylene (HDPE) fittings for potable water supplies IS 10124:Part 1 to 13:1988 Specification for fabricated PVC fittings for potable water supplies IS 10313:1982 Requirements for settling tanks (clarifier equipment) for water treatment plant IS 10446:1983 Glossary of terms relating to water supply and sanitation terminology. IS 12709:1994 Specification for glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes, joints and fittings for use for potable water supply active.

11 3.4 Type of Data 3 -Standards for Conformance-
BIS/CII initiative to form a Committee for Identification of Standards Action plan for comprehensive standards Type of approval and certification process Requirements/capabilities of Indian laboratories for testing Involvement/responsibilities of standards for development/ certifying organizations Methods to control non-standard equipments/ components

12 4.0 Discussion Points Understanding the existing standards in India and USA Gaps in Standards Finalize total data requirement from both sides Next Steps
