1 Welcome to our Maths Information Evening
Helping our children to achieve

2 Our aims for this information evening are:
To give an overview of the Maths curriculum To outline the clear progression of the four calculation methods and how these are taught at our school To provide ideas on how you can support your child at home

3 National Curriculum for Mathematics
Fluency – fluent recall Depth - reasoning Mastery – problem solving

4 Number Number and place value Addition and subtraction
Multiplication and division Fractions, decimals and percentages Measures Geometry Statistics

5 Concrete Pictorial Abstract

6 Class 3 and 4 – Years 4, 5 and 6 Addition Subtraction Multiplication
Division

7 Addition

8 Children need to understand what they are doing during addition before they are ready for the formal written method

17 Multiplication :

18 Multiplication Progression
arrays grid method compact- column multiplication

19 Models for multiplication
Arrays - commutative

20 The Grid Method

21 More than single digits?
10 18 18 8 10 100 80 13 13 3 30 24

22 Progressing towards the grid…
Progressing towards expanded column… 1 0 8 1 0 1 0 0 8 0 3 3 0 2 4 Progressing towards expanded column… Now, have a go at this question on your whiteboards using one of the methods here, then try a different method: 53 x 15 =

23 This moves to the more compact method

24 Division

25 5 6 7 8 56  7 Either: How many 7s can I see? (grouping) Or:
If I put these into 7 groups how many in each group? (sharing) 5 6 7 8

26 An image for 56  7 5 6 7 8 How many 7s can I see?

27 5 6 7 8 How many 7s can I see?

28 8 How many 7s can I see? 7 5 6

29 8 How many 7s can I see? 7 5 6

30 120  3 The power of the place value: counters for larger numbers
Is this sharing or grouping? 40 120 3 30

31 1200  3 Similarly for 100s 400 1200 3 31

32 Hundreds Tens Ones 3 2 0 1 1 6 1 3 8 23 6 138

33 853 ÷ 5 =

34 How can you support your child?
Learn times tables – make it fun. Make up raps/sing to tunes Keep calm when they are doing homework. If they don’t understand something and your not sure which method to use, ask a teacher Play cards and board games Educational maths apps Allow your child to handle money, read timetables and be involved with measuring.
