A little background… Mrs Hinton I have been a teacher for ten years, initially in Aberdeen City Council and more recently in Aberdeenshire. Last year I gained Professional Recognition in Learning for Sustainability, focusing on food and cooking education, which is an area of teaching about which I am passionate. I live in Insch with my husband and our two children, Eliza and Dexter, our three chickens and our two cats. Mrs McGunnigle I have been a teacher for 11+ years now, teaching at: Balmedie Primary, Kellands and as a visiting specialist teacher of ICT. I have worked in partnership with other professionals within Aberdeenshire Council to develop the use of Games Based Learning in the classroom. I have 2 children of my own; Layla, 5 and Archie, 2. We all live, along with my husband and dog, in Inverurie.

About the Class 24 members of the class.
Work at table groups which are periodically changed. Different areas in the class – calm area, working tables, wet area, research/finished work area and reading corner. Resources are easily accessed by children including 8 class iPads. Within Literacy and Numeracy the children will work in groups which are created so that their learning is best supported and extended. Regular assessments are carried out and groupings will change based on these results. Within each group your child's own strengths and support needs are taken into consideration.

Behaviour Management Strategies:
Take a Break Class Dojo Activity Time During Activity Time the children choose fun structured activities as a reward for working hard during the week. The class works together to earn as many ClassDojo Points as possible to earn special Activity Time, such as a movie or class party. Pupils can also loose out on Activity Time for poor behaviour. The Table of the week gets an extra 10 minutes of Activity Time. Pupils can ask permission to use the area if they are feeling upset or angry or they need a brain break. We might also suggest that a pupil use the area if we feel they need a break. The area has things like, playdough, rice, blankets, colouring books and lots more! Class dojo is a points system and a great way of sharing learning with parents. Children can be awarded points individually or as part of their group. In some situations, points may be removed in order to discourage undesirable behaviour. IPad 3

Communication with Parents
The best way to get in contact with us is via Class Dojo messages. We operate an Open Door policy, so please feel free to get in contact with us at any time if you have a query. If any issues arise with your child in class, we will contact you promptly to discuss.
13
Homework Homework each week will consist of a maths task, spelling words, reading and a reading task. The maths homework may be a worksheet, a practical task, or revision of times tables. Spelling words may be new words or revision of previous words, new sounds or revision of a previously covered sound. Reading will be heard in class twice a week, on a Tuesday and a Friday. This will usually be a book, but occasionally we will set leaflets, magazines or newspapers. Pupils will be given a reading task each week and will have a week to prepare their task. It is important that this is ready for the set day so we can have a reflective discussion on the text. Each term we will set a longer homework task, such as this term’s Personal Learning Project.
14
Curricular Coverage This term in maths we are learning about place value, addition, and measurement. In literacy we are focussing on spelling, punctuation, adjectives, similes and metaphors. We will also look at note taking. In health we will look at resilience and growth mind-set. In topic we are studying the seas and oceans. We are learning about the habitats, food chains, map reading and environmental issues connected to the sea such as climate change and recycling.

Reflective Learning We are trying to promote ‘Reflective Learning’ with the children in the school. You will notice that the children usually have ‘I can…’ statements in their jotters/pieces of work. This has been discussed with the children prior to their learning and then reflected on after the lesson to see if this learning took place. Have a look around the room to see the children reflecting on their learning.
17
AiFL strategies linked to reflective learning:
Sharing and creating Learning Intentions and Success Criteria Tickled pink and green for growth 2 stars and a Wish Thinking time No hands up – randomiser (dojo or lolly sticks) Regular praise and feedback - verbal and written on work. Peer and Self Assessment Traffic lights (green, amber, red) Reflective Questions

How to support at home Ensure homework is completed, including reading tasks and reading. This could be done by either hearing reading or asking your child questions about their book. Revise and consolidate times tables. Involve your child in any measuring activities – cooking, DIY. Continue to revisit spelling patterns from previous weeks. Support your child in finding information for their personal project. Make sure that work is in their own words and uses accurate sentence structure and punctuation.

Developing the Young Workforce
This year in school we will be looking at ways to prepare our young learners for the workplace. This involves developing skills that employers look for when recruiting, such as communication, leadership and team work skills. The children will also learn about the World of Work. If you have any skills/contacts that the school could tap in to in this regard we would love to hear from you. Please fill in the DYW note of Interest slip.
21
Parent Helpers In addition to DYW links, the school is always keen to hear from parents who could help in classes for reading, school trips etc. Please sign up if you can help.
