Reader’s Workshop / Guided Reading
A mini-lesson is taught on a specific skill. Small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals Spelling and Vocabulary How to choose a “Just Right” book Second Grade Focus Areas: - Main Idea - Ask/Answer Questions - Recount/Summarize - Story Structure - Author’s Point -Compare and Contrast

What is Daily Five? Promotes students to become independent readers and writers Students build stamina (memory muscle) Rotate through different literacy areas- read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work and work on writing. Specific behaviors match each area. Allows for the teacher to work with students in guided reading groups, while other students are engaged in meaningful literary reading and writing activities.

Writer’s Workshop A mini-lesson is taught on a specific skill.
Students will then have individual time to apply these skills in their own writing. One-on-one or small group conferencing with students is done at this time. Author’s Chair Second Grade Focus Area: Opinion Narrative Informational

Homework / Study Skills
Each night, your child will come home with assignments written in their agenda. In 2nd grade, we expect your child: - to read 20 minutes each school night - to complete homework and bring it to school the next day - to bring agenda AND communication folder to school every day - to have behavior chart signed nightly Homework: Math homework is assigned Mon. – Thurs. on one sheet for the week.

How Can You Help? Check backpack each night.
Empty/go through take communication folder each night. Student work is usually sent home on Thursdays. Please review. Guide your child through nightly homework. Check agenda, sign behavior chart, and document nightly reading. Use our class blog to be updated about activities, announcements, and newsletter.
