1 Multiplication Workshop

2 Aims of the Workshop To raise standards in maths by working closely with parents. To provide parents with an overview of teaching multiplication at Belton All Saints Primary School. To provide parents with materials that they can use at home to support children’s maths development.

3 Year 2 Pupils should be taught to: •recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers •calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and equals (=) signs •show that multiplication of 2 numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of 1 number by another cannot •solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts Year 3 Pupils should be taught to: •recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables •write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods •solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division, including positive integer scaling problems and correspondence problems in which n objects are connected to m objects Year 4 Pupils should be taught to: •recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12 •use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally, including: multiplying by 0 and 1; dividing by 1; multiplying together 3 numbers •recognise and use factor pairs and commutativity in mental calculations •multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout •solve problems involving multiplying and adding, including using the distributive law to multiply two-digit numbers by 1 digit, integer scaling problems and harder correspondence problems such as n objects are connected to m objects

4 Multiplication Practical Multiplication - 2 x 4 2 lots of 4.
2. Use of arrays x 5 3. Repeated addition 4 x 5 = = 20 or = 20 This is an array.

5 Number lines can be used to do the addition part!
Multiplication cont ….. 4. Repeated addition can also be done on a number line. 4 x 5 5. Partitioning – Simple recording 17 x 3 = (10 x 3) + (7 x 3) = 51 Number lines can be used to do the addition part! 30 51 21 +

6 Add the numbers inside the grid together to get the answer.
Multiplication cont ….. 6. The Grid Method This is our key strategy for beginning to formally record multiplication. 17 x = (10 x 3 ) + (7 x 3 ) = 51 7. Multiplying two 2 digit numbers 18 x 23 Estimate 20 x 20 = 400. = = 414 X 10 7 3 30 21 Add the numbers inside the grid together to get the answer. Try to add the numbers together mentally. If not, use a written method. X 10 8 20 200 160 3 30 24

7 Multiplication cont ….. 8. Once children are confident with the grid method, they will be introduced to the following strategies for recording. Short multiplication x 3 9. Long multiplication x 32 Estimate x 30 = 5400. leads to x x 21 (7x3) (10 x 3) 51 (184 x 2) (184 x 30) 5888

8 Mental before written We need to first develop a sense of number

9 TIMES TABLES END OF YEAR 2: 2X 5X 10X END OF YEAR 3: 3X 4X 8X
END OF YEAR 4: ALL TIMES TABLES UP TO 12X 12 FACT FAMILIES DIVISION FACTS APPLICATION Fluency Reasoning Mastery

10 How do we teach times tables?
In School: Minute maths Online games Ipad apps Card games Repetition Flash cards Multiplication square work Domino games Counting on Arrays Practical resources Songs and rhymes Children need to be able to: Count on (2,4,6,8 etc) Recite in order Answer questions out of order (rapid recall) Answer division facts out of order (rapid recall) Use and apply to real problems and investigations

11 ACTIVITIES!!

12 In September… MIGHTY MULTIPLES HALF TERMLY FOCUS
