5. Silicone’s Superiority
Silicone rubber is an outstanding synthetic elastomer. It possesses an excellent combination of chemical and mechanical properties, which makes it the superior option vs other organic elastomers.
Used in a wide assortment of industries, Silicone is generally non-reactive, resistant to ozone/oxidation, UV light, extreme environments, and stresses. Most notably it can be formulated to perform consistently from −60°C to +300°C.
Solid silicone is much stronger and durable than sponge, there are no air bubbles in solid sheet so it will withstand high torque and pressure forces. Perfect for use as a seal or gasket in precision machined applications.
Silicone also does not react with most chemicals or the environment, making it ideal for many food and medical applications.
As a guide it is safe to operate as if the lifespan of a general-purpose silicone is halved for every 10°C above its intended use.
