9 “Sphere” means 3D circle or our globe.
Hemisphere “Hemi” means half. “Sphere” means 3D circle or our globe. So hemisphere means half of the globe.

10 THE EQUATOR The Earth is divided into a northern half and a southern half by an imaginary line called the equator These halves are called hemispheres

12 If your body was a globe, the equator would be your waist!

13 Prime Meridian The Prime Meridian is an imaginary line that connects the North Pole and the South Pole on one side of the Earth. It runs through a place called Greenwich (pronounced Gren’ich), England.

15 If your body was a globe, the Prime Meridian go from the top of your head to your feet on the front side of your body.

16 International Date Line
The International Date Line is an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole on the opposite side of the earth from the Prime Meridian.

The Prime Meridian and the International Date Line divide the Earth into two more hemispheres

23 Latitude and Longitude Lines
Latitude and longitude lines are imaginary lines on the earth’s surface that make up a grid used to find location.

24 Why are Latitude and Longitude Lines Measured in Degrees?
In math, circles are measured in degrees. There are 360° in a circle Since the earth is basically circular it was decided to measure latitude and longitude in degrees.

25 Equator The first line of latitude is the Equator=0°
All other lines of latitude are measured in degrees North or South of the Equator How many degrees of latitude do you think the equator represents.

26 Latitude Lines Latitude lines run east and west around the globe
They tell you a location’s distance north or south of the equator

28 Latitude Lines Think of latitude lines like the rungs of a ladder
Lat/Fat They are parallel lines

29 Prime Meridian The first line of longitude is the Prime Meridian=0°
All other longitude lines are measured in degrees East or West of the Prime Meridian

31 Longitude Lines Longitude lines run from north to south around the globe They tell you a location’s distance east or west of the Prime Meridian

32 Longitude Lines When you think of longitude lines think of tall telephone poles Remember longitude lines run from pole to pole LONGitude

33 To Find Latitude For example 60 °N
1. Go to your starting line (the Equator) 2. Determine which direction you must go (north or south) 3. Determine the distance in degrees you must go (60)

34 To Find Longitude For example 40°E
Go to your starting line (the Prime Meridian) Determine which direction you must go (east or west) Determine the distance in degrees you must go (40)

35 How to use Longitude and Latitude
When listing latitude and longitude place the latitude coordinate first Remember to include the direction with the number Example: 60°N, 40°E

36 Finding Coordinates Find the place where the latitude and longitude lines intersect and you are done!
