1 Upper KS2 Assessments and Standards
Parent Information Meeting

2 Welcome to the Meeting Aims of the meeting:
give a clear picture of the academic expectations for the UKS2; share samples and expectations; discuss the test themselves. Sheena

3 What is the purpose of Assessment?
recognise achievement; report progress to parents; enable exchange of information within school; inform teaching; provide information for national statistics; enable monitoring of performance of schools. Sheena

4 Teacher Assessment At the end of KS2, your child is assessed in Mathematics, English (Reading and writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation - SPaG) by his/her class teacher. This assessment is based upon all the work your child has done in that particular subject. The Teacher Assessment levels are reported to you alongside SAT results, at the end of KS2. The SATs are a snapshot of how your child is doing. They tell us how they did on a particular day. The Teacher Assessment levels come from the work your child has done over the entire year. Sheena

5 Updates New curriculum introduced to all years except Y2 and Y6 September New curriculum introduced for Y2 and Y6 September 2015. Removal of levels – Assessing Without Levels. Ways of calculating/reporting the national average and personal achievement are different. Sheena

6 Lessons Learned from 2016 Writing: Presentation
Huge emphasis on spelling – non-negotiable, rules Application of skills – opportunities to show learning Mathematics: Emphasis on problem solving Number agility Correct strategy – decision making (mental or written) Reading: Vocabulary and analysis of language Stamina! Resilience

7 Reporting to Parents Scaled score – mean average
Standardised score – compared to other (/100) Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard Teacher assessments alongside Sheena

8 The SATs. The Standard Assessment Tasks (Tests)
Mathematics Paper 1: Arithmetic paper 30 mins. (no longer mental mathematics aural test) 36 questions worth 40 marks; Paper 2: Reasoning 40 mins. 35 marks Paper 3: Reasoning 40 mins. 35 marks Calculator paper was REMOVED FROM 2014 Reading and comprehension 3 texts to read and answer questions in 1 hour. 17 Arithmetic paper - not contextual – straightforward calculations for all four number operations, including the use of fractions, decimals and percentages. Children expected to make decisions between mental and written methods. Rapid recall and application of facts is essential minutes - 36 questions worth 40 marks

28 Special Needs and Access Arrangements.
For some children, reading the paper may be difficult; a reader can be used if this is normal practice. Spelling is not an issue in the mathematics SATs as long as handwriting is legible. Extra time may be allowed to any child who does find recording challenging due to a specific difficulty. However, this is rare. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to come and ask. Sheena

29 Implications for Year 5 - Maths
Past papers only for Y6 Balance of strategy and exciting learning Weekly times tables and mental maths Learning focused on progression Strategies Growth Mindset Want chn to achieve to the best of their ability – would be hugely unfair to Mrs Semple and children if no prior knowledge Only complete past papers in Y6 Past papers are available online for reading, writing and spelling – web locations will be given later Children have, since they were in Y2, done various tests at the end of the year, under exam conditions so it’s nothing new Worthwhile having a look to get a flavour, but don’t practise using those as we use them in school X tables – beat that

30 Implications for Year 5 – Reading
Comprehension Composition and effect on reader Strategies for decoding and contextualising How to answer questions effectively All lessons are built around elements of reading and writing Majority of writing is focused on composition and effect on reader Building in elements of punctuation and grammar Weekly spelling test – both to extend vocabulary and revise spelling patterns

31 Implications for Year 5 – Writing
Focus on progression Skills sessions on grammar and punctuation Self-editing as part of the lesson Practical elements / topic based Next steps in learning, teacher assessment continuous, fairer rather than snapshot Grammar is picked up within marking and general teaching in lessons, however, will be working on some specific elements of grammar e.g. where to use a semi colon, introducing new sentence structures for effect with correct use of commas, use of apostrophes etc. Will be looking more specifically at elements of that as the year progresses, however, majority of Y5 work is on achieving reasonable quantities and Children edit and self-edit as part of their work in all Literacy lessons Topic based and retains element of fun and creativity to inspire children e.g. drama, stimulus, writing for a purpose

32 The SATS When and Where? The tests take place throughout one week in May. The test papers arrive in school a few days before the tests take place. This year the tests start on Monday 8th May – Thursday 11th The completed papers and marks are available in early July (online). Parents and children receive their results in the end of year reports. The majority of children take the tests in the hall, but where readers are used, we sometimes have groups working separately. Sian

33 Preparation for the tests:
Interventions (including over lunch) SPaG daily Arithmetic daily Writing across genres using the ‘big write’ model Practise papers Familiarisation with the format/strategy Working within a strict time frame – STAMINA! Problem solving and challenge Application of knowledge Instant recall of number facts Activities planned for after SATs and creative curriculum maintained Sian

34 How Can I Help My Child? Keep these tests in perspective;
Continue to support your child at home with any revision or homework given; End of Year expectation booklets; Revise mental and written methods for all four number operations. Revision guides and books, always useful – CPG booklets, WHSmith As well as websites, Sian

35 Thank you very much for coming tonight.
Any questions? We hope this was useful. Thank you very much for coming tonight. Sheena
