Coordination of Communication: Effects of Shared Visual Context on Collaborative Work
Fussell, S. R., Kraut, R. E., & Siegel, J. (2000). Coordination of communication: Effects of shared visual context on collaborative work. In Proceedings of the 2000 ACM conference on Computer supported cooperative work (pp ). ACM. Presented by Fannie Liu
2
About the Authors Susan R. Fussell Robert E. Kraut Jane Siegel
3
Motivation Understand the role of visual information in computer-supported cooperative work Visual info is important for grounding
4
“Talking Heads”
5
Study Augment video with: Views of task object Views of worker actions
6
Study Conditions Measures Audio-video Audio Side-by-side
Task performance Work and communication quality Conversational coding
7
Work and Communication Quality
Findings Performance & Quality Task Performance Work and Communication Quality
8
Findings Conversational Analysis
Mean duration of references to task objects % deictic references to task objects

Findings Audio-Only H: The derailleur has I guess there is gonna be—there should be I think two bolts and a clamp that looks sort of like an elongated “c”. W: Yeah, on the table. H: and then the derailleur also has a clamp that looks sort of like a “c”.
10
Findings Audio-Video W: What’s derailleur?
H: Derailleur is just a little mechanical thing that changes the ah chain from the small ring in the front to the large ring in the front. W: Ok it’s just this one, is that right? H: Uh yeah.
11
Findings Side-by-Side H: And this is the front derailleur. W: Ok.
12
Video < Side-to-Side?
Difficulty establishing which info is shared Lacking some visual cues Environment Worker’s face Helper can’t gesture

Discussion Are there collaborative tasks that work better without a shared visual space? …for intelligence intensive tasks like coding collaboration, do we need to have video real-time feedbacks at all? - Fanglin …in the audio condition it is easy to just ignore and focus while the video condition is actually adding more ambiguity by half showing things or showing blurred images. - Julian

Discussion Much of CMC is still done over “talking head” systems. What barriers do we need to overcome to move to better CMC systems? From Michael, Room2Room: HoloLens Elevator Repairman

Discussion What are affordances of technology that might help us achieve better interaction experiences in CMC over FtF? Before we had to say things like, "This is just like that scene in Back to the Future with the clock tower and the plug. Do you remember that. Try to recall it in your head so you can appreciate the numerous parallels." But now we can shorten that to, "lol potentially get a richer interaction as well. - Nick Room2Room, CSCW 2016 Holoportation, UIST 2016
