Learning Objectives Demonstrate how much sugar can be found in popular drinks. Show you how to can calculate the amount of sugar in a drink and understand what too much sugar is. Identify 1-2 changes you can make to promote a healthy lifestyle AND save money by not purchasing expensive sugary drinks. Specifically, we will be looking at how many teaspoons of sugar are we drinking.

What is a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage?
A beverage that has sugar added to it and does not have naturally occurring sugar. Examples: Soda Fruit Punch Energy drinks Juices Vitamin water Sports drinks

Concerns about Sugar-Sweetened Beverages
Sugary drinks are the single largest contributor of added sugar in the American diet. The average American consumes ¼ pound of added sugar a day, or 100 pounds a year. Extra calories from sugar-sweetened beverages can lead to weight gain and obesity. Adults who drink one or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day are 27% more likely to be over weight than those that do not.

Consumption Facts Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages by adults has doubled in the last 30 years. The typical bottle of soda has tripled in size, from 6.5 ounces in the 1950’s, to 34 or even 64 ounces today. This translates to increased caloric intake and subsequent weight gain.

Sugar equivalence: 6 Krispy Kreme original glazed donuts 1 can, 16 fl ounces While the calories are not the same, the sugar content of a Rockstar Energy is the same as 6 Krispy Kreme donuts! By far one of the worst culprits of added sugar. In general, avoid energy drinks whenever possible.

Sugar Equivalent: 6 Breyers Oreo Ice Cream Sandwiches 1 bottle, 20 fl ounces Sodas are notorious for adding high amounts of sugar to the American diet. Sunkist in particular is high in sugar and calories.
