2 PURPOSE FOR REVIEW • Broward County Schools, first accredited in 1962, must participate in an external review every five years in order to retain AdvancED School System Accreditation. • The team will review the system and its schools to evaluate the system’s adherence to the AdvancED Accreditation Standards.

3 2011 ACCREDITATION REPORT Required Action 1:
Design and implement a system wide policy and corresponding process to ensure the AdvancED Standards for Quality Schools are assessed at every school and utilized to verify all schools meet the AdvancED accreditation standards. District Response: • District-wide training on Accreditation Standards conducted regularly. • School trainings on ASSIST include the self-assessment as a required component of the School Improvement Plan. • District and schools to regularly include AdvancED Accreditation Standards in their agenda at staff meetings, P.T.A. meetings and School Advisory Council meetings. • District created accreditation website has been created with additional resources to educate schools and stakeholders in standards.

4 2011 ACCREDITATION REPORT Required Action 2:
Proactively take aggressive action to showcase and promote Broward’s positive impact on its students. Strategically plan to purposefully bridge the discernible gap between public perception and reality relative to Broward’s performance and impact on the students it serves. District Response: • Superintendent Listening Tours and Conversations with the District are opportunities for stakeholders to provide insight to District leadership about issues facing the District and the educational priorities of the community. • Ed Talk public forum implemented for District leaders to obtain input on the development and implementation of the District's Strategic Plan • The Office of Service Quality has been created and is devoted to assisting parents and community members by linking them to available resources, providing accurate information and resolving concerns. • Marketing and Communication Plan has resulted in increased media relations, social media communications, and communications training for staff.

5 2011 ACCREDITATION REPORT Required Action 3: Institute procedures to fully maximize the positive impact of the site-based approach to school leadership and decision-making. District Response: • Schools organized into cadres and sub-cadres where principals collaborate with each other for professional learning communities • The school supervision structure has been redesigned whereby directors who oversee schools are deployed as coaches and mentors to principals. • School performs annual self-assessment in ASSIST and take action based on results • School principals have the sole discretion to select and hire personnel (after all contractual obligations are met, for example surplus and guaranteed transfers).

6 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS
Purpose and Direction The system maintains and communicates at all levels of the organization Standard 2: Governance and Leadership The system operates under governance and leadership that promote and support student performance and school effectiveness. . Standard 3: Teaching and Assessing for Learning The curriculum, instructional design and assessment practices guide and ensure teacher effectiveness and student learning. Standard 4: Resources and Support Systems The system has resources and provides services in all schools that support its purpose and direction to ensure success for all students Standard 5: Using Results for Continuous Improvement The system implements a comprehensive assessment system that generates a range of data about student learning and system effectiveness and uses the results to guide continuous improvement

7 ACCREDITATION TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES
A team of trained professionals from across the state and nation will: • Review Broward County Schools’ documents and performance data • Interview system, school and community stakeholders • Conduct site reviews of several schools • Observe system and school practices in action

8 PREPARATIONS FOR ACCREDITATION
Informational Meetings: Office of Service Quality presented Accreditation information at North, Central, South, and District Advisory meetings each month Quarterly School Improvement Training: Specific components of Accreditation discussed at half-day sessions for administrators and SAC Chairs OSQ staff trained by AdvancED Support Team Accreditation Standards: • Imbedded in SIPs • Schools collect and post in SIP artifacts that demonstrate alignment to Accreditation Standards OSQ staff participates on other district/school AdvancED Review Teams AdvancED Stakeholder Survey for Parents, Students and Staff utilized by all Broward County Public Schools

9 ACCREDITATION REPORT The Accreditation Team report will include:
• Recognition of Strong Practices • Areas for Improvement to the System In two years, the district will be required to report to AdvancED its progress in addressing the team’s Improvement Priorities.
