YCJUSD Child Nutrition Services

2 General Information Smart Snacks in Schools went into effect July 1, 2014 Competitive food: all foods and beverages sold on school campus outside of the reimbursable meal program to students Standards apply from midnight to 30 minutes after the end of the school day

3 Nutrient Requirements
Calorie Limits Snack items: ≤200 Entrée items: ≤350 Fat Limits Snack/ Entrée total fat: ≤35% of kcal Saturated fat: ≤10% of kcal Trans fat: 0 grams Sodium Limits Snack items: ≤200 mg Entrée items: ≤480 mg Sugar Limit ≤35% of weight from total sugars in food Helpful Tool Smart Snack Calculator

4 Getting to know the FACTS Middle Schools and High Schools

5 Beverages Milk (fat free white & chocolate, 1% white)
Non dairy must be nutritionally equivalent to milk 12 fl. oz. per serving </ 5 grams fat per 8fl oz. </28 grams total sugar per 8 fl. oz. 1% (unflavored) nonfat (flavored, unflavored) must contain Vitamin A&D Water (no added sweeteners) >/50% Fruit or Vegetable Juice(no added sweeteners),

6 Electrolyte Replacement Beverages (High school ONLY)
No Calorie Electrolyte Replacement Water must be first ingredient </16.8 g added sweetener/8fl oz. </5 calories/8fl oz. 10-150mg sodium/8fl oz. 10-90mg potassium/8fl oz. No added caffeine </20 fl.oz Low-Calorie Electrolyte Replacement </40 calories/8fl oz. 10-90mg potassium </12 fl oz.

7 Flavored Water Beverages (High School ONLY)
Must be either </5 calories/8 fl oz (no calorie) OR </ 40 calories/8 fl oz (low calorie) No added sweetener No added caffeine </20 fl. oz. serving size (no calorie) OR </12 fl. oz. serving size (low calorie)

8 Snacks Must meet Nutrient Requirements (listed on previous slide)
Must be a Fruit Vegetable(non-fried) Dairy product Protein food(nuts, seeds, legumes, cheese) Whole Grain product (WG must be the first ingredient and comprise at least 51% of total grain weight verified by manufacturer.) Combination food that contains at least ¼ cup fruit or vegetable and at least 2 of the 5 food groups (fruit, vegetable, dairy, protein, grain) Any food with fruit, vegetable, dairy, protein, or whole grain listed as the first ingredient.

9 Entrées Must meet Nutrient Requirements (see slide 3)
May be 1 of these three options Whole grain & Meat/Meat Alternate Fruit or Vegetable & Meat/Meat Alternate Meat/Meat Alternate USDA does not recognize single servings of yogurt, cheese, nuts, seeds, and meat as entrée options but rather are categorized as snack items. ≤350Calories

10 Fundraisers Standards apply to all fundraisers.
Non-compliant foods may be sold a ½ hour after the end of the school day PTA: fundraising opportunities are unlimited per each school year.

11 Student Organizations
Middle & High Schools Only 1 student organization can sell per day Multiple organizations can sell on 4 designated days per year (no more than 3 categories of food) Cannot prepare items on school campus Cannot be same item sold by Nutrition Services Department that day Items must be pre-approved

In accordance of AR 3554(b), referring 5CCR 15500&15501 “The specific nutritious food item is approved by the superintendent or designee” Steps for food and beverage fundraiser approval: 1. 13 Recordkeeping School district is responsible for ensuring that each organization selling competitive foods and/or beverages maintains records that document compliance At minimum Receipts Nutrition labels and/or product specifications

14 Monitoring & Compliance
Compliance is monitored as part of the State agency administrative review If violations have occurred, technical assistance and corrective action plans would be required Schools may incur fines or funding may be withheld for schools out of compliance
